A daycare owner in New York City has been handed a 45-year prison sentence after her fentanyl trafficking operation led to the tragic death of a 1-year-old child in her care. Grei Mendez, aged 37, who ran a childcare facility in the Bronx, pleaded guilty last October to charges related to the death of 1-year-old Nicholas Feliz Dominici and the poisoning of three other children under her supervision.

Mendez’s illegal activities came to light after it was discovered that her daycare was being used as a front for a narcotics stash house. The toddler, Nicholas Feliz Dominici, lost his life in September 2023 due to exposure to fentanyl that had been stored under play mats at the Divino Niño daycare. Mendez and her accomplices were found to have kept over 11 kilograms of fentanyl and heroin hidden in secret compartments under the daycare’s floor tiles.

According to prosecutors, Mendez and her co-conspirators ran the narcotics business from the daycare between June 2022 and September 2023. The operation involved storing significant quantities of dangerous drugs in concealed compartments within the playroom, posing a grave risk to the children under their care. Mendez’s cousin, Carlisto Acevedo Brito, also faced charges related to the incident, including assault, drug possession, endangering the welfare of a child, and manslaughter.
