9 Family Members Dead, Including 6 Children, After Vehicle Plummets Down a Well During Nighttime Drive

A tragic accident in India claimed the lives of nine members of the Durgade family when their vehicle fell into an uncovered well on Friday, April 3. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. local time as they were returning from a school performance at the Janta English School in Dindori, where several of the children had participated.

The family’s multi-purpose vehicle reportedly plunged into a 40-foot-deep well situated in the Shivaji Nagar area. Initial investigations suggest that the driver was unable to see the well in the darkness, leading to the catastrophic fall. Local police confirmed that the occupants of the vehicle became trapped once it descended into the well.

After the alarm was raised, rescue operations were initiated, lasting over two hours. Efforts to recover the victims included deploying hydra cranes and enlisting the help of local swimmers to reach the submerged vehicle. However, despite the prompt response from emergency services, none of the individuals inside the vehicle survived. Authorities lifted the vehicle out of the well by approximately 12:15 a.m. on Saturday, subsequently transporting the victims to a nearby hospital.

The deceased included six children and three adults. Among the young victims were Rakhi, aged 9, Shraddha, 12, Shravani, 11, Shrishti, 13, Shreyas, 11, and Samruddhi, only 6 years old. The children were related through two sets of brothers within the family. The adults were identified as Sunil, the driver, his wife Reshma, and Asha, the spouse of Anil Durgade.

Following the devastating incident, a 14-year-old cousin, Ajay Durgade, spoke about the moments leading up to the tragedy. He recounted the family’s happiness following the performances, particularly Rakhi’s honoured recognition for achieving the highest marks in her class. He noted that the family left before the final song played to avoid heavy traffic, marking the last time he saw them.

Another relative, Sachin Durgade, expressed his desire for accountability from the local authorities. He stated that once the mourning period concludes, the family will seek explanations regarding the incident. He emphasised the need for answers regarding why the well, which has been a long-standing hazard in the neighbourhood, had not been sealed despite previous complaints.

The well has been located in a residential area for many years, a situation highlighted by Sandeep Boraste, a local civil contractor. He explained that the land transitioned from farmlands—where wells were permissible—to residential zones since the early 2000s, resulting in an increase in housing developments while the well remained unaddressed.

Residents of the area have voiced their concerns about the dangers posed by the well, particularly to children and families living nearby. The incident has ignited discussions about the need for local authorities to take more decisive action in filling in such hazards to prevent future tragedies.

Officials from the Indian Police Service, Dindori Police Station, and Janta English School have not yet responded to requests for further comment regarding the incident or the status of safety measures in the area.

This heart-wrenching event has left the local community in shock, mourning the loss of a family that was well-regarded and had been joyously celebrating their children’s achievements only hours before the tragedy unfolded. The combined efforts of family members and local residents in seeking answers reflect a communal desire for safety improvements in their neighbourhood, ensuring that such an incident does not happen again.
