Plath, who began losing her hair as a child, described how the condition, which can lead to patchy or complete hair loss, escalated in severity in recent years. Reflecting on her experience, she shared, “When I was little, it all fell out. As I grew up, I would occasionally have little patches, but they were always something I could conceal. Still, I had deep-seated insecurities stemming from that.”

The situation worsened for her leading up to a family wedding, where she experienced rapid hair loss. “I was really insecure about it. Around Lydia’s wedding, I just started really falling out like this,” she recounted, demonstrating how quickly her hair disappeared. “Within a few weeks, it was all gone.”

Alopecia is a condition that affects approximately 6.7 million individuals across the United States, as reported by the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. It occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, leading to various forms of hair loss, most commonly the coin-sized patches associated with alopecia areata. The source of the disorder remains unknown, making it a challenging condition for many.
In the episode, Plath is seen grappling with her hair loss and deliberating over wearing wigs. She described the struggle to find something to cover her head as frustrating and ultimately made the decision to shave her hair completely. “I was just wearing whatever I could find to cover my head. And I told my mum, I was like, ‘I’m going to have to shave my head.’ And she was like, ‘Oh, who do you want to do that?’”
Ultimately, Plath chose to have her brother, Ethan Plath, assist her in shaving her head. This decision proved to be a deeply emotional experience. “I told him what was going on, and he was like, ‘Of course.’ He shaved my head, and I was just sitting there bawling my eyes out,” she recalled. While the act itself was challenging, she conveyed that having her brother by her side provided a sense of comfort and support.
“It was really, really hard at first for a while, but just having Ethan do that, it was very healing, very sweet. It was what I needed in that moment,” Plath reflected, showing how important familial support can be during tough times.
The emotional turmoil associated with alopecia is a reality for many individuals who live with the condition. Moriah’s openness in sharing her story is a reminder of the psychological impact that hair loss can have and the importance of acceptance and support from loved ones.
