Gail Simmons, known for her role as a judge on the popular culinary competition “Top Chef,” recently revealed she had a remarkable escape from a serious injury. In a candid post on Instagram, the 49-year-old cookbook author shared the details of a painful incident which occurred just before filming for the show’s third episode.

Two days prior to filming, Simmons suffered a fall when she tripped on a pavement and collided with a boulder. Describing her accident as “no joke,” she noted how fortunate she was to avoid severe damage, stating, “It’s a miracle I didn’t break my nose, crush my cheekbone, or cause serious damage to my eye.” Instead, she was left with significant bruising, which necessitated a clever use of makeup to conceal the injury while on camera.

Simmons, who was seen sporting glasses during the previous two episodes, clarified that her eyewear was a stylistic choice rather than a necessity for vision correction. “Lots of people asking about the glasses I wore on the last two episodes of @bravotopchef, assuming they were for reading. I actually wear contacts and both are 100% clear lenses, worn as an accessory only,” she explained.
For the filming, the show’s dedicated makeup artist Tara Pagliara and wardrobe stylist Charlotte Rose Coleman sprang into action to ensure Simmons looked her best despite her injury. They employed “heavy-duty prosthetic makeup” and selected the right glasses to mask the visible bruising, allowing the show to continue smoothly. She expressed profound gratitude to the professionals, stating, “I’ve never been more grateful to these two pros for their support and smarts.”
The bruising, which Simmons highlighted in her post with contrasting before-and-after photographs, healed within two weeks, illustrating the successful recovery of the TV personality. Remarkably, she mentioned that even most crew members were unaware of the injury.
The chef community responded with an outpouring of support following her revelation. Notable figures included fellow chef Carla Hall, who enthusiastically commented, “CRAZY! I’m so glad you’re ok! The glasses are too cute though! High 5 with the face art! 🙌🏽” Additionally, her co-star Tom Colicchio wrote, “Down but never out,” while actress Melanie Lynskey praised her positive outlook despite the painful experience.
“Top Chef,” now in its 23rd season, premiered on March 9 and was filmed across North and South Carolina. Simmons has been a staple on the show since its inception in 2006, balancing her television career alongside her family life. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, she discussed how she juggles motherhood with her responsibilities on the series.
Simmons and her husband Jeremy Abrams have two children together, Dahlia, aged 12, and Kole, aged 7. Reflecting on the joy of involving her children in her professional life, she shared, “The coolest thing my kids have gotten to do is come to almost every single season we have shot since they’ve been alive.” She recounted how her daughter particularly cherishes these experiences, relishing the opportunity to taste new foods and explore various cities, all while connecting with the show’s hosts.
As Simmons continues her journey on “Top Chef,” her dedication to both her craft and her family remains evident. Her recent accident serves as a reminder of the challenges faced in the limelight, yet her resilience and ability to shine remain a testament to her character. As the season unfolds, fans can look forward to more culinary delights, along with the heartwarming moments that Simmons’ presence brings to the show.
