Boy, 7, Drowns in Pond While Trying to Save His Friend, Family Says: ‘It Breaks My Heart’

In a tragic incident in North Carolina, a seven-year-old boy has lost his life while attempting to rescue a friend who had fallen into a pond at the base of a waterfall. Abel Friday-Williams, a first grader at Southwest Primary Elementary, was discovered submerged in the water at Bruce Meisner Park in Hickory on the evening of April 1.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 7 p.m. upon reports of a child in distress. According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, responders found Abel submerged and immediately transported him to Frye Regional Medical Center. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The heartbreaking circumstances leading to Abel’s death have left his family and the local community in shock. Brianna Sledge, Abel’s aunt, revealed to local news channel WSOC-TV that he had entered the water in a brave attempt to save a friend who was in trouble. “It breaks my heart because he saved his friend and lost his life,” she remarked, emphasising the selflessness of Abel’s actions.

Abel’s cousin, Lashun Ramseur, highlighted the need for greater awareness regarding the dangers posed by such waters. He called attention to the risks inherent in the area and expressed a desire for the community to learn from this tragic event. “There needs to be awareness that this is very dangerous,” he stated, underscoring the perilous nature of the environment surrounding the waterfall.

Community member Tara Rink shared her own frightening experience at the park, recalling a separate incident where she witnessed another individual having to leap into the turbulent waters to save a young girl. Rink recalled the treacherous conditions that made rescues particularly difficult, describing the rocks as “too slick” and covered in a slippery substance that can pose significant risks to anyone attempting to traverse them.

In the wake of the incident, Abel Friday-Williams is remembered fondly by those who knew him. His obituary reflects on the “joy, laughter, and spirited energy” he brought into the lives of his loved ones. Abel leaves behind his mother, Jarica Williams, along with siblings Grayson, Kaiden, and Zalayah, as well as a large extended family comprised of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

“To say that he was a bright light in our lives is an understatement. His sudden passing has left us heartbroken and searching for comfort,” Sledge expressed on a GoFundMe page established to assist with funeral expenses. She also conveyed her gratitude for the outpouring of support from friends, family, and even strangers during this challenging time.
