In a powerful account of resilience, Eastbourne resident Sas Parsad has shared his long and difficult journey towards managing Crohn’s disease, a chronic condition that significantly impacted his quality of life. Fifteen years ago, the then-30-year-old experienced severe stomach cramps in the middle of the night, initially attributing his distress to food poisoning. However, as days turned into weeks with his symptoms worsening, he realised that this was no ordinary ailment.

Parsad’s gastrointestinal issues escalated, leaving him “debilitated,” with intense cramps coupled with an overwhelming need to rush to the loo. “I was pretty much housebound and unable to work. I was back and forth to the toilet 100 times or more a day, sore and bleeding constantly,” he recounted. The impact on his personal and professional life was severe, filling him with anxiety about potential social situations and relationships.

Living with his mother during this challenging period, Parsad faced daunting uncertainties. Despite his struggles, he was concerned about whether he would ever find a partner willing to understand his condition. “I was asking myself, ‘Am I going to find someone who will understand this?'” he said, reflecting on his fears at the time. As the months went by, weight loss and psoriasis flares compounded his distress.
After numerous visits to the doctor and enduring multiple tests, including a colonoscopy and an endoscopy, he was finally diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. This inflammatory bowel disease is known to cause inflammation and irritation in the digestive tract, often resulting in debilitating symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhoea, and fatigue. Upon receiving the diagnosis, he described feeling as though he had fainted, overwhelmed by the profound implications.
While the news was overwhelming, Parsad chose to take control of his health journey. Rather than succumbing to despair, he began researching nutrition and working on lifestyle changes to manage his condition. By implementing a diet focused on easily digestible foods like meat and eggs, the results were encouraging: he began to reclaim his energy and wellbeing.
Parsad adopted intermittent fasting, significantly changing when he would first eat each day. His meals now typically consist of chicken, eggs, and yogurt, allowing greater digestive comfort. Furthermore, he eliminated sugars and processed foods from his diet, leading to noticeable improvements in his overall health.
In addition to dietary adjustments, Parsad prioritised regular exercise, good sleep, and outdoor activity. “I’ve been amazed at how much better it made me feel,” he stated, crediting his newfound lifestyle with revitalising his health. He also stresses the importance of hydration and sunlight, elements he believes significantly contribute to his wellbeing.
Inspired by his own recovery, he founded The Gut Co., a company dedicated to supporting gut health through a range of vitamins and supplements. While he learned to manage his condition, he acknowledged that his experiences may not be universally applicable. “I’m not saying I have found a cure for Crohn’s. Everybody is different, and what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for another,” he noted.
Reflecting on the journey with Crohn’s disease, Parsad feels a sense of optimism. He remains committed to avoiding surgical intervention and medication for as long as possible. “For me, the glass is half full,” he remarked. “Yes, I’ve got a chronic condition which can be challenging at times, but compared to what some people have to go through, it’s a drop in the ocean.”
As he continues to navigate life with Crohn’s, Parsad’s story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the importance of understanding one’s health. His experience not only reflects the difficulties faced by those living with chronic illnesses but also exemplifies how proactive measures in lifestyle and diet can lead to substantial improvements in quality of life.
