Man Allegedly Tries to Slash Billiards Partner’s Throat at Infamous Gilgo Beach: DA

A 26-year-old man from Venezuela has been indicted on charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault following a disturbing incident at Gilgo Beach, New York. Ruben Guanipa Ramirez is accused of attacking a billiards partner with a knife after driving him to the infamous beach on 28 February.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney described the alleged actions of Ramirez as particularly troubling in light of the area’s dark history. Gilgo Beach has been associated with the discovery of several sets of human remains linked to suspected killings over recent decades. “This defendant allegedly drove a man that he knew to a remote beach and attacked him from behind with a knife,” Tierney stated in a recent press release.

The prosecution claims that Ramirez picked up his acquaintance from his residence in Queens and subsequently drove him to Baldwin, where they enjoyed a game of pool at a local billiards hall. Following this, it is alleged that Ramirez took the victim on a short detour to Jones Beach before heading towards the remote Gilgo Beach.

As they made their way back to Ramirez’s vehicle, he reportedly ambushed the victim, covering his mouth with a cloth while stabbing him in the left side. During the struggle, Ramirez allegedly attempted to slice the victim’s throat and inflicted several cuts across his neck. Despite suffering defensive wounds to his hands, the victim managed to overpower Ramirez and seized the knife.

Following the confrontation, the victim escaped by driving away in Ramirez’s vehicle, leaving his attacker behind. Unfamiliar with the surroundings, he called emergency services and reached out to a friend for assistance. After arriving at a friend’s home in Queens, police officers from the New York City Police Department met him and he was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Prosecutors stated that Ramirez was apprehended later that day while walking along the Long Island Expressway in Nassau County. A thorough search of his vehicle uncovered three kitchen knives, one of which appeared to have blood on it, alongside rope, duct tape, blankets, plastic drop cloths, a large-wheeled bag, gloves, and a box cutter.

The situation has raised alarm in a community already unsettled by the recent spotlight on Gilgo Beach, due to ongoing investigations into serial killings. Most notably, Rex Heuermann, a former architect, has been charged with the murders of seven women connected to the area over two decades. He is expected to plead guilty to the charges in question.

Ruben Guanipa Ramirez has been held on bail set at $200,000 following a judge’s ruling. The potential consequences of a conviction on the most serious charge could see him facing a prison sentence of between five to 25 years. At this point, it remains unclear whether Ramirez has entered a formal plea, and efforts to locate an attorney representing him have so far been unsuccessful.

With the combination of the recent attack and the historical grimness of Gilgo Beach, local authorities are reminded of the importance of safety and vigilance in the area. As the investigation continues, the community’s apprehension about violence and criminal activity remains palpable, as residents look for answers amid the troubling string of events associated with the beach.
