Jason Mraz is preparing to release his ninth studio album, titled *Grandma’s Gospel Favorites*, on May 8, coinciding with Mother’s Day. This album holds sentimental value for Mraz, as it was originally crafted nearly two decades ago as a Christmas gift for his grandmother, Mary Helen Mraz-Fowler, affectionately known as “Nanny Raz.” The musician is sharing this long-hidden project with the public in tribute to her memory.

The album features a collection of beloved gospel classics alongside two original compositions, showcasing Mraz’s roots and the profound influence his upbringing in rural Virginia has had on his work. Throughout his significant career, Mraz has often drawn inspiration from the hymns and gospel music of his childhood, and this new project reflects that heritage. Notable tracks include Mraz’s unique interpretations of hymns such as “Old Rugged Cross” and “It Is No Secret,” as well as a lively bluegrass-style rendition of “Turn Your Radio On.”
Leading the release is Mraz’s version of the timeless hymn “His Eye Is On The Sparrow.” Other highlights from the album include “Daddy Sang Bass,” which has been famously performed by Johnny Cash, and “Never Grow Old,” a track previously recorded by music legends such as Aretha Franklin and Jim Reeves. Additionally, the album pays homage to Elvis Presley with renditions of “It Is No Secret” and “Evening Prayer,” both of which were associated with the King of Rock and Roll.
Mraz has collaborated with several talented musicians on *Grandma’s Gospel Favorites*. His long-time associate Noel “Toca” Rivera provides background vocals, while Andy Powers from Taylor Guitars contributes several instruments, including mandolin, banjo, and pedal steel guitar. The album also features string arrangements crafted by Ray Suen, utilising violin and viola to enrich the sound.
In addition to the classic gospel tracks, Mraz penned two original songs specifically for this album. “Peach Pie” delivers an upbeat tone inspired by the amusing antics of squirrels stealing from his peach tree. Meanwhile, “When We Die (You Are Loved)” offers a poignant reflection on life and what lies beyond, encapsulating the essence of Mraz’s thoughtful songwriting.
