A 39-year-old man from Seattle has been charged with attempted murder after being accused of trying to push another individual in front of a light rail train. Elisio Melendez is facing a charge of second-degree attempted murder, as confirmed by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on March 25. The incident took place at Northgate station, where video footage shows Melendez, dressed in a hoodie, stealthily approaching a passenger who was waiting for the train. In a shocking attempt to harm the man, Melendez allegedly tried to shove him in front of the oncoming train. Fortunately, the intended victim managed to catch himself and avoid a potentially fatal accident.
Following the event, Melendez fled the scene, prompting a swift investigation by local authorities. Police utilised neighbourhood surveillance footage, along with tips from the Seattle Police Department, to track him down to a nearby mental health facility. Investigators later discovered matching clothing and shoes linked to the incident in Melendez’s room, including two pairs of Nike trainers, a Tommy Hilfiger sweatshirt, and black jeans.
According to an affidavit filed by an investigator with the King County Sheriff’s Office, these items were collected as evidence in the case. The investigator noted the items’ resemblance to what Melendez had worn during the incident, adding weight to the prosecution’s case against him.
As of now, Melendez is being held on a considerable bond of $750,000. His legal troubles are not new, as he was previously charged in 2019 with domestic violence-related assault. Following several court-ordered restoration periods for his competency, the case was eventually dismissed, leading to his civil commitment to Western State Hospital for treatment.
