A tragic incident in Hudson, Massachusetts has resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man, Devin Dube, charged with the murder of his 90-year-old grandmother, Elaine Dube. The alleged attack occurred on Tuesday, March 31, and has been characterised by local authorities as a “senseless tragedy.”

According to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, police received simultaneous calls reporting that Devin Dube had assaulted both his grandmother and his sister using a skateboard. The first alert came from Devin’s sister around 3:10 p.m., who claimed she was being attacked by her brother. Shortly after, another call was made by a male resident, reporting that Elaine Dube had been assaulted.
During a press conference, District Attorney Marian Ryan detailed that Devin attacked his grandmother with a skateboard multiple times, striking her head. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the confrontation escalated to include his sister and father, who were also attacked during the incident, suffering injuries from the violent outburst.
The scene of the alleged attack appeared to be the basement of their shared family home, a location where Elaine Dube had been residing. Following the incident, emergency services discovered that Devin had fled the scene. Approximately 45 minutes later, police received reports of a person behaving erratically in the vicinity. They apprehended Devin, who was reportedly found hidden in a van on a nearby property, and took him into custody without resistance.
Following the attack, Elaine Dube was transported to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Her grandson’s father and sister were also taken for treatment, although their injuries were reportedly non-life-threatening. Both have since been discharged from hospital.
The charges Devin faces include murder, along with multiple counts of assault and battery, which involve serious bodily injury. He was formally arraigned at Marlborough District Court the day after the incident. Reports suggest that he has a history of schizophrenia, and during a psychological evaluation conducted by forensic psychologist Dr. Hilary Novak, it was revealed that he experienced auditory and visual hallucinations.
Dr. Novak has since commented that it remains uncertain whether Devin will be able to stand trial in his current mental state. He is set to undergo a 20-day evaluation in a hospital, with a return to court scheduled for April 17.
