Courtney Love Recalls Visit with ‘Repulsive’ Marlon Brando, Who She Thought for Years Was Her Grandfather

Courtney Love has revealed that for many years, she suspected legendary actor Marlon Brando might be her grandfather, owing to an alleged romantic liaison between Brando and her grandmother, Paula Fox, a celebrated novelist. Although she now understands that Brando is not related to her, Love reflected on their unimpressive encounter during a recent appearance on Billy Corgan’s podcast, *The Magnificent Others*.

Speaking candidly about her past, Love, 61, shared her experience of meeting Brando, which she found rather off-putting. “When I met him, I thought he was super repulsive,” she stated. This encounter, however, was simply the culmination of a long-held belief stemming from her family history. Love recounted how her connection to Brando began through Warren Beatty—a friend and neighbour of Brando—whom Love had known well enough to reach out for a meeting with the actor.

Her determination to meet Brando was clear; she expressed to Beatty that her intentions were purely personal, insisting, “I don’t want anything from Marlon Brando.” Ultimately, Beatty conveyed that Brando would only agree to meet her if she sent a personal note, to which she complied. “I wrote him a note. ‘I don’t want anything from you,’” she recalled.

Remarkably, during the meeting, Love found herself in an intriguing position. She was invited to use Brando’s bathroom, where the temptation arose to take a sample of his DNA from his toothbrush. “Nah. Maybe I’m too much of a feminist, but I was like, ‘I don’t need your last name,’” she explained. “I gave my word that I had no ulterior motives.” In hindsight, she manifested relief at her decision, noting that it was fortunate Brando wasn’t her grandfather after all.

While Love has not identified her true grandfather, she has characterised him as a “very tall man.” Brando and Fox were both connected to actor Stella Adler in the early 1940s, a period during which Fox became pregnant with Love’s mother, Linda Carroll. Love’s mother was subsequently placed for adoption, and it wasn’t until adulthood that the singer discovered Fox was her biological grandmother.

The dynamics between Love and Fox, who passed away in 2017 at the age of 93, were complex. They met just once, and the meeting proved to be fraught. Fox later described the encounter unfavourably, stating, “She’s awful, she’s awful. She’s terrible!” In a 2013 interview with *The Observer*, Fox shared her feelings about their brief interaction, labelling it as a difficult experience for both of them. Love, conversely, expressed shock at her grandmother’s strong dislike, terming it “shocking and inexplicable.”

Despite the tense relationship between the two, Love could not resist making a light-hearted remark about the resemblance she perceived between herself and Brando prior to her first cosmetic surgery. “If you look at me before my first nose job, I kind of look like Marlon Brando,” she quipped.

Marlon Brando, whose legacy in cinema remains unparalleled, was a father to at least eleven children throughout his life, which he lived until the age of 80 before passing away in 2004.
