Angela Furnival, Sam’s owner, was delighted to receive the news of his recovery on March 21, almost a decade and a half after he disappeared from her home in May 2014.

Sam was discovered just half a mile from his original home, a location that Furnival found surprisingly close. Rescuers suspect that he had been living outdoors all these years, foraging for scraps from sympathetic neighbours to survive the harsh British winters. Veterinary staff, who attended to Sam after he was brought in by a couple who had recently moved into the area, noted that the elderly feline was suffering from health issues, which included an ear infection and a thyroid problem.
Furnival, now 63, was informed of Sam’s discovery a day prior by a veterinarian associated with the Paws Together Enville rescue charity. The couple who found Sam mentioned that they had seen him looking unwell during their walks. They had initially intended to adopt kittens from the charity but decided to report Sam after realising he needed help.
In discussing the day she received the news, Furnival expressed her shock and joy. “When I got the call, I honestly couldn’t believe it; it was just wonderful. I thought Sam would never return,” she confessed. Furnival had acquired both Sam and his brother, Toby, from a local rescue in 2011. After they settled into their new environment, she began to let them explore outdoors. I checked the nearby school and fields, but he never came back,” she recounted, revealing the depths of her worry and loss over the years.
After living in Stourbridge for two years without Sam, Furnival moved to Kidderminster in 2016. “You come to terms with the fact that you hope someone has taken him in and been looking after him,” she said. Despite the passing years and her dire circumstances, she never lost hope entirely.
To her heartfelt surprise, the news that Sam had been found mere minutes from her old home filled Furnival with disbelief. She often visited that area in search of her beloved pet, yet had no idea he was so close all along. The microchip embedded under Sam’s skin played a crucial role in the reunion, allowing the veterinarians to contact Furnival with the vital news.
Reflecting on the emotional reunion, Furnival described the moment they were reunited. “Sam came to the front and was purring straight away, it was like he’d never been away,” she reported. Sam’s return marks a new chapter as he adjusts to living as an indoor cat with Furnival and her small dog.
