A devastating incident unfolded in Plainville, Connecticut, on March 27, when Patrick King allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, Felisha Matthews, and her two daughters before turning the gun on himself during a standoff with police. The tragic events have left the community in shock and mourning.

The victims have been identified as Felisha Matthews, aged 31, her four-year-old daughter Ava King, and 12-year-old Molina Matthews. According to Plainville Police Chief Christopher Vanghele, emergency services were alerted to the situation shortly after 3:53 p.m. local time when a concerned family member contacted 911, reporting that King had claimed to have killed his partner and their daughter and threatened to take his own life.
Upon arriving at the scene, police established a perimeter around King’s residence and made several attempts to communicate with him, but these efforts were unsuccessful. As the situation escalated, a SWAT team was deployed, and a negotiator managed to establish contact with King via telephone. Despite attempts to persuade him to surrender peacefully, negotiations failed.
In an effort to compel King to exit the home, authorities made the difficult decision to deploy pepper gas into the premises. Tragically, shortly after the gas was released, King fatally shot himself in the head. Emergency services attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a local hospital.
Inside the residence, law enforcement discovered three bodies, all of which sustained gunshot wounds. The police chief confirmed that King, who was reported to have moved to Plainville only a few months prior, had no previous encounters with law enforcement at the residence. It was noted that the weapon used in the shootings appeared to be legally registered to King, who also possessed a permit to carry.
Vanghele indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that authorities have yet to determine the motive behind this horrific act. “This is a very dark day for the town of Plainville and for Connecticut,” he remarked during a press briefing.
Plainville Town Manager Mike Paulhus expressed his sorrow over the incident, acknowledging the shock that has swept through the community. “I’m not sure we’ll ever understand what transpired,” he said. Paulhus affirmed the resilience of the community, noting that they would come together in this tragic time while also acknowledging the profound sadness enveloping the area.
The relationship between King and Matthews reportedly spanned over seven years. Social media posts revealed a loving bond between the couple, with Felisha celebrating their anniversary in August of 2025. She reflected on their journey together, describing it as filled with “love, chaos, growth, and so many second chances.” Her affectionate words for King showcased a deep connection that, tragically, culminated in this heartbreaking event.
Local residents expressed their shock at the events, with many struggling to comprehend how such a tragedy could unfold in their community. Neighbours recounted their encounters with the family, revealing a level of normalcy that masked the darker realities behind closed doors. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of personal relationships and the sometimes hidden struggles individuals may face.
In response to the tragedy, local mental health resources are emphasising the importance of seeking help when dealing with emotional distress. “If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out,” said officials in the wake of the incident.
As the investigation continues, the community of Plainville is left to grapple with the aftermath of a heartbreaking violence that has irrevocably altered the lives of many. The memory of Felisha, Ava, and Molina will undoubtedly linger on in the hearts of those who knew them, serving as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the need for support in times of crisis.
