In a captivating story of hope and connection, Kaedi Cecala, a 38-year-old woman from the United States, has shared her extraordinary journey of battling myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and the life-changing impact of receiving a stem cell transplant. Diagnosed with this serious blood disorder in July 2020, Cecala’s struggle would ultimately lead to an unforgettable connection with her donor, Karol Zwierzinski, a young man from Poland.

Cecala’s health issues began with routine blood tests in 2016 after she had transitioned off her mother’s health insurance. Her consistently low blood cell counts prompted years of investigations and medical consultations, though she was repeatedly reassured that her condition was likely not serious. It was not until the life-altering diagnosis was delivered that she began to grasp the severity of her situation.

The moment she was told she had MDS felt almost surreal for Cecala, who recalls the language used was clinical and detached. Initially, she was under the impression that it was merely a syndrome and did not consider it cancer. However, that perception shifted dramatically when a doctor explicitly mentioned the word “cancer” in the presence of her then-boyfriend, Mikey, now her husband. This pivotal moment forced Cecala to confront the reality of her situation and the challenges that lay ahead.

Despite the grim diagnosis, Cecala adopted a positive mindset, believing that negativity could be as harmful as the cancer itself. “I tried to approach everything with the best attitude I could,” she explained. Her condition required a stem cell transplant, which would be her only viable path to remission. Doctors monitored her condition closely, implementing a “watch and wait” strategy until her situation became critical enough to necessitate immediate action.
In August 2021, after entering the transplant process, Cecala was shocked to discover that she had found a match within just weeks. The identity of her donor, Zwierzinski, was shrouded in mystery at first. She was struck by the notion that a complete stranger had made the altruistic choice to register as a donor, unaware of who he would eventually assist across the globe. “I was just overwhelmed with gratitude,” she admitted.
For Zwierzinski, the decision to become a stem cell donor stemmed from personal connections, including a family member who had previously donated. When he received a call confirming that he was a match for Cecala, he felt an immediate sense of purpose. “I did not hesitate even for a moment,” he recalled. The commitment showed both his dedication and the heartfelt motivation behind the choice to help others.
The transplant journey for Cecala was intensely challenging, marked by painful treatment and recovery. Chemotherapy had devastating effects, and she struggled with extreme fatigue and discomfort. As a salon owner who had spent her career helping others feel beautiful, the loss of her hair and the impact on her well-being were particularly poignant. However, Cecala found herself focused on getting through each day, often finding solace in rest.
Over the two years post-transplant, Cecala often reflected on her donor, expressing a desire to thank him for saving her life. With each passing month, the longing to connect grew stronger. When the opportunity finally arose for the two to meet, the excitement was palpable. Their relationship transformed from that of a patient and donor to a heartfelt friendship, culminating in an invitation to Cecala’s wedding.
When New Year’s Eve 2025 arrived, the celebration was set against the backdrop of incredible gratitude and emotion. In a surprise move that delighted their friends and family, Karol and his wife, Dominika, travelled from Poland to attend the wedding. Cecala’s husband made a heartfelt speech about real-life angels, prompting an emotional moment as the couple entered the venue, welcomed by gasps of astonishment from the guests.
Zwierzinski’s presence at the wedding symbolised not only Cecala’s remarkable journey toward health but also the profound impact of kindness and generosity. His speech encouraged others to consider becoming donors, reminding everyone that their “Kaedi” could be out there waiting for a chance at life. It was a truly moving moment for both Cecala and Zwierzinski, as he reflected on the joy he felt seeing her flourishing, dancing alongside loved ones.
Cecala is now in remission and embracing her second chance at life. Her journey has ignited a passion for advocacy, leading her to spearhead a fundraising campaign under the auspices of Blood Cancer United, aiming to support blood cancer research and patient resources. This remarkable story stands as a reminder of the potential for connection and altruism to change lives and highlights the vital role of stem cell donors in the fight against blood cancer.
