A tragic incident in Midlothian, Texas, has left a three-year-old boy severely injured following an unexpected attack by the family’s pit bull mix. Kelsey Marie Welch, the boy’s mother, described the shocking event, recounting how her son, Julius, was attacked inside his bedroom on March 22.

Welch, 30, stated that she had owned the dog since it was six weeks old and had never observed any signs of aggression in the animal. “He was just covered in blood,” she recalled, her voice shaking with emotion as she described the harrowing moments following the attack.

According to Welch, the situation escalated quickly after the dog suddenly jumped onto Julius’s bed and began to bite him. “It pounced on the bed and started attacking my son,” she told reporters. In her frantic attempt to save her child, Welch fought to get the dog to release its grip from Julius’s head. “I was trying to get the dog to open his mouth because he immediately went for the back of his head,” she added.
In the chaos, Welch herself became a target when the dog clamped onto her leg. Fortunately, she managed to confine the animal to the bedroom, ensuring both she and her son were no longer in immediate danger. Despite her efforts, the aftermath of the attack left Julius with life-threatening injuries.
Even as Welch reflected on the horrendous experience, she was haunted by the imagery of her son during the ordeal. “I still close my eyes and I see that image of my son — I can’t even see his head — and a dog shaking [him],” she recounted, showing the profound emotional toll the incident has taken on her.
After the disturbing event, Julius was airlifted to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas. His condition required a lengthy nine-hour surgery along with a blood transfusion. Recently, Welch reported that her son has begun to recover, stating, “We took the breathing tube out about two days ago, and he opened his eyes fully today.”
The Midlothian Police Department (MPD) responded to the incident and subsequently made the decision to euthanise the dog. As of now, no charges have been filed in relation to the attack. Inquiries regarding the case remain open, but the police have yet to provide further comments.
In response to the family’s need for assistance during this difficult time, a GoFundMe page was created by family friend Lakin Farver. The fundraising effort aims to help cover medical expenses, as well as other costs associated with the aftermath of the incident. Farver explained the situation on the platform, stating, “I created this to help with medical costs, cleanup of the trailer they live in, and any other costs that may arise while transporting back and forth between the hospital and home.”
The page garnered attention as community members were encouraged to help support Julius and his family. Farver expressed appreciation for any contributions, while also making it clear that thoughts and prayers for the family are invaluable amidst the challenges they face. “Please take your time to read and share this story,” Lakin added, acknowledging the difficulty many people currently experience in trying to navigate their own financial burdens in the current economy.
As Welch continues to care for her recovering son, she also has two other children at home who need her attention and support. The emotional and financial strain caused by this tragic incident highlights the undeniable impact of unforeseen circumstances in the lives of families.
The community’s outpouring of support during this challenging time emphasises the importance of solidarity in times of crisis, as Julius and his family navigate the road to recovery.
