**Tragic ATV Accident Disrupts Mother-Daughter Holiday in Honduras**

A mother and daughter trip to Honduras took a devastating turn when 30-year-old Shontaneece Brooks was severely injured in an ATV accident. The incident happened during a seven-day holiday in February, where Brooks and her mother, Colondra Wilson, embarked on an adventure riding four-wheeled vehicles through a jungle setting.
Initially, the mother-daughter duo was enjoying their time in the tropical paradise. However, Brooks’ lack of experience with ATVs took a dire twist when her vehicle hit an unexpected root embedded in the ground. Colondra recalled with anguish how her daughter was thrown from the ATV and collided with a tree at high speed.
“She had never ridden one before, and she was going faster than she wanted to,” Wilson, 49, elaborated. “She kept hitting the brakes because she was afraid. When she hit the root, she was already going about 15 to 20 miles per hour, and that’s when the handlebars went wild, ejecting her from the four-wheeler.”
The aftermath of the accident was harrowing. Eyewitnesses described Brooks’ injuries as horrific, with her mother recounting how her daughter’s face bore the brunt of the impact. “Her face was covered with a sheet, and I remember falling to my knees and praying to God,” Wilson stated. The trauma left Brooks with a severely lacerated face and multiple dental injuries, leading her mother to describe her daughter’s condition as “looking like ground meat, dripping in blood.”
Emergency medical assistance was summoned to the scene, but the situation worsened for the family when they were faced with unexpected financial demands from the local medical facility. According to Wilson, they were required to pay $5,000 upfront in order for Brooks to receive treatment. The lack of travel insurance, which Brooks had opted not to secure prior to the trip, made the situation even more precarious for the family.
It was reported that the medical team took a grueling eight hours to address Brooks’ facial injuries and another 24 hours to stabilise her broken arm. “As a mum, I felt so hopeless,” said Wilson from Texas. “I could have lost my daughter. It was the worst experience of my life.”
In response to the medical bills and consequent financial strain, friends and family have launched a GoFundMe campaign. The crowdfunding effort aims to alleviate the costs associated with Brooks’ emergency care, reconstructive work for her teeth, and to support her mother, who has been unable to work as she dedicates her time to caring for her injured daughter.
“This has been a wake-up call for us,” Wilson reflected. “It’s a reminder not to take life for granted. One moment everything can be fine, and the next it can all change.”
The tragic incident has not only highlighted the dangers associated with adventure sports, particularly for those inexperienced in handling such vehicles but has also underscored the importance of securing travel insurance before embarking on holidays.
