Dan Hurley, the esteemed head coach of the University of Connecticut’s men’s basketball team, has enjoyed a successful career in sports, but his life beyond the court is equally fulfilling. Dan and Andrea met during their time as students at Seton Hall University, although at first, Andrea was unaware of Dan’s family’s basketball legacy. Dan hails from a prominent basketball family; his father, Bob Hurley, was an acclaimed high school coach with 26 state championships, while his brother, Bobby Hurley, notably starred at Duke University and currently serves as a head coach in college basketball.
Speaking about their budding relationship, Dan remarked, “Meeting Andrea was the best thing that happened to me at Seton Hall. She saved my life and inspired me to be better.” Andrea shared that they started as friends, leading to a growing bond that culminated in their marriage on August 29, 1997. Interestingly, the date also marks Dan’s parents’ anniversary, further intertwining the family’s story.
The Hurleys welcomed their first son, Danny, in 1999, followed by their second son, Andrew, three years later. Dan had already begun his coaching career at Rutgers when Danny was born, and he almost missed the delivery due to a recruiting trip in Croatia. Andrea humourously recounted the intense experience leading up to Danny’s birth, highlighting how her husband was able to make it back just in time.
Over the years, Andrea has become deeply involved in supporting Dan’s career and the players at UConn. While she admits to having “zero interest in the game,” her commitment to fostering a nurturing environment for the athletes is evident. Known for her kindness, she often bakes cupcakes for the players’ birthdays and acts as a second mother figure to many of them. “The players are honestly my favourite part,” Andrea stated, expressing her affection for the young men under her husband’s coaching.
In addition to her advocacy for the athletes, Andrea has also shared her experiences as the wife of a coach through a podcast titled “Ball is Wife,” which she started in 2021 with fellow coach’s wife, Nicole Kellogg. The podcast discusses the challenges and emotions faced by wives of NCAA coaches, providing insight into their lives and the unique pressures that accompany their husbands’ careers.
Dan has always prioritised his role as a father alongside his coaching responsibilities. While he spent years coaching his sons at various levels, he remained dedicated to providing them with love and guidance. He even extended his coaching stint in high school to ensure he could be present for Danny and Andrew’s formative years. “I wanted to be a parent who set an example for them,” he explained.
Both sons have followed in their father’s footsteps in various capacities. Danny attended Seton Hall and graduated in 2021, describing his father as a significant influence in his life. Since then, he has stepped into the professional realm, serving as an aide to the governor of New Jersey.
Andrew, on the other hand, took a slightly different path. He joined the UConn basketball team as a walk-on during his freshman year, later winning a championship under his father’s guidance. Reflecting on the experience, Dan spoke about the emotional weight of sharing these moments with his son. “To go through basketball with him is really powerful,” he shared after a significant win.
Andrew noted that despite the family’s basketball background, the strong support system from his family has helped alleviate any pressure he might have faced as a player. “I don’t feel any pressure really,” he commented, attributing his confidence to the unwavering support from his parents, reinforcing their close-knit family dynamic.
Today, Andrew continues his journey in basketball as a graduate assistant, working with the team at UConn. Dan proudly acknowledges the similarities between himself and his sons, expressing his joy in watching them develop both on and off the court. “Both my boys are a chip off the old block,” he remarked, highlighting their shared passion and drive.
