Joseph Duggar, a reality television personality, is reportedly finding it difficult to adapt to life in the Washington County Detention Facility in Arkansas. During a recent phone call with his wife, Kendra Duggar, Joseph disclosed he spends 23 hours a day in solitary confinement and is facing challenges with his sleep. The conversation took place on March 20, shortly after Kendra was released from the same detention centre, where she was charged with multiple offences related to child endangerment.

Duggar, 31, was taken into custody on March 18, following allegations of sexual abuse against a nine-year-old girl during a family vacation in Panama City Beach, Florida, in 2020. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office in Florida has charged him with lewd and lascivious molestation of a minor under the age of 12, as well as lewd and lascivious behaviour by an adult. Following his arrest, Duggar was moved to the Arkansas facility while awaiting extradition to Florida.

In a dramatic turn of events, Joseph and Kendra, aged 27, were both charged on March 20 in Arkansas with four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in the second degree, as well as four counts of false imprisonment. According to the Tontitown Police Department, these new charges are unrelated to the allegations arising from Joseph’s alleged actions in Florida.

Details from the call, which were obtained by PEOPLE, reveal Joseph’s struggles in confinement. In a subdued voice, he mentioned passing the time by reading the Bible, which he was provided while incarcerated. “I’m in solitary,” he told Kendra, detailing the confines of his cell as an “8-by-10 area” that, while small, has allowed him to manage some reading and rest. However, he expressed concerns about not sleeping well at night.
The couple’s communication came after Kendra had missed two previous attempts by Joseph to connect with her. They were unable to see one another when Kendra surrendered to authorities earlier that day. In their conversation, they also discussed practical matters, such as Joseph signing over his personal belongings so that Kendra could retrieve them.
While Kendra’s situation appears complicated, she confirmed during the call that she had already sought legal representation mere hours after her release. Her first court appearance related to the charges is scheduled for April 29. Meanwhile, Joseph remains in custody, awaiting his extradition to Florida to address the separate allegations against him.
The current legal troubles for the Duggar family have drawn significant media attention, particularly given their previous status as stars of the TLC reality show “19 Kids and Counting.” Joseph’s situation has sparked widespread discussion online, with many scrutinising the implications of the charges and the family’s response.
In light of the serious nature of the allegations against him, Duggar’s revelations about his time in solitary confinement have raised questions about the psychological impact of incarceration on individuals facing such severe charges. Whether he will manage to secure a favourable outcome in his upcoming legal proceedings remains to be seen.
As for Kendra, her legal troubles contribute to a deeply troubling narrative surrounding the family. As both parties navigate their respective challenges, the unfolding situation highlights the complexities and ramifications of their situation, which could have lasting effects on their lives and those of the individuals involved in the charges.
