Shannen Doherty Wanted to Do a “Charmed” Convention Before Her Death

Holly Marie Combs, best known for her role as Piper Halliwell on the beloved television series “Charmed,” has shared insights into her late co-star Shannen Doherty’s profound impact on the show’s legacy. Reflecting on their time together, particularly after Doherty’s passing in July 2024, Combs expressed her deep admiration for Doherty’s creative spirit and her numerous unfulfilled ideas for the series and its fans.

In a recent episode of the podcast “House of Halliwell,” Combs reminisced with co-hosts Brian Krause and Drew Fuller about the numerous projects and events that Doherty had envisioned. “There was nothing that we couldn’t accomplish,” Combs stated, highlighting the ambitious plans that the cast had discussed prior to Doherty’s illness and eventual death from cancer at the age of 53.

Combs recalled, “I think back on all the things we wanted to do, and all the things we had planned. I kind of feel bad that I’m not doing all of them, because by now she would have had us doing three, four different things,” including the possibility of hosting their own “Charmed” convention in the United States or launching a home brand together.

Doherty, who portrayed Prue Halliwell, the eldest of the three witch sisters, was not only an actress but also an influential director on the show. She left “Charmed” at the end of its third season in 2001, yet her spirit and creativity remained palpable among the cast and fans alike. Combs further emphasised Doherty’s relentless drive for innovation, noting that she was constantly generating ideas. According to Combs, Doherty had written “many scripts” and brainstormed show concepts that could have led to exciting new avenues for the series.

Reflecting on a particularly challenging day during their time filming, Combs shared a poignant memory of how Doherty’s creativity served as a source of inspiration for her. She spoke about surrounding herself with photos of Doherty while barbecuing, essentially creating a ‘shield of armour’ to bolster her spirits amid a tough shoot. “Her inspiration was boundless,” Combs lamented, expressing how she felt as if they could conquer anything together.

At ’90s Con in September 2024, Combs further detailed the deep bond she had with Doherty. She disclosed how Doherty played a pivotal role in securing her casting as Piper Halliwell. The two actresses met as teenagers and had initially auditioned for the roles of Phoebe and Piper together, only for the network to express their reservations about both of them. However, with a firm push from Doherty and executive producer Aaron Spelling, Combs ultimately succeeded in winning the role, demonstrating the strength of their collaboration.

Combs recalled, “Shannen and Aaron said, ‘We’re not really the show without Holly,’” illustrating the commitment they all shared to ensure the right cast was brought to life on screen. Combs also highlighted the lengths they went to convince Spelling, who had asked for their IDs to confirm their age suitability for the older characters.

Doherty’s contribution to “Charmed” extended beyond her acting; she brought depth and authenticity to the character of Prue and established strong bonds among the cast. Her influence is still felt today, with Combs expressing a sense of loss over the potential projects that never came to fruition.
