Fla. Cops Patrolling Spring Break Beach Arrest Man Who Killed His Infant Son with a Coffee Mug

A man previously convicted for the death of his infant son was apprehended during a busy spring break weekend in Daytona Beach, Florida. Anthony Grove, 44, was arrested on March 21, 2023, while he was on the run from authorities in Ohio for an alleged violation of his parole.

The arrest came about as deputies patrolled the area, which was crowded with spring break visitors. They initially approached another individual for an open container violation, but upon requesting his name, they discovered Grove was wanted. This information was confirmed through a social media post by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, who indicated the heightened police presence in anticipation of large crowds.

Chief Deputy Brian Henderson recounted the encounter, explaining that officers were deployed to manage potential disturbances in the area. During the interaction, Henderson attempted to engage Grove in conversation as a way to establish rapport. When asked about his children, Grove mentioned that he had two but stated, “one passed away,” ostensibly seeking sympathy for his loss.

Henderson, who expressed his emotional response to Grove’s attempt to elicit sympathy, later commented that it was troubling for a father to seek empathy from strangers while withholding the truth about his involvement in the child’s death. The Chief Deputy’s reaction emphasised the gravity of Grove’s past actions, which involved a significant tragedy related to his son.

In 2015, Grove pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of his two-month-old son, Zeeland. The deadly incident occurred during an argument between Grove and the child’s mother when he threw a ceramic coffee mug. The mug struck the infant in the head while he was in his mother’s arms, leading to severe injuries. The infant was taken to the hospital but died the day after the incident.

Alongside the manslaughter charge, Grove also pleaded guilty to charges of child endangerment. This led to an eight-year prison sentence, a significant reduction from the original murder charge he faced at the time. The altercation that resulted in his son’s death had reportedly stemmed from a disagreement between him and the child’s mother over smoking in their home.

After serving his time, Grove was released from prison in 2023. However, he soon became a fugitive, with authorities in Ohio issuing a warrant for his arrest over a parole violation. His subsequent arrest in Florida raised further legal issues, including charges not directly related to his past conviction. He was charged in Florida with failure to register properly as a convicted felon and possession of cannabis under 20 grams.
