New Zealand Police confirmed they were alerted to the situation at approximately 1:45 a.m., indicating a “sudden death” onboard as the cruise ship arrived from Sydney, Australia. A police spokesperson stated that they are currently gathering information regarding the circumstances surrounding the death on behalf of the coroner.

While the identity of the deceased and the preliminary cause of death have not been released, a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean Group expressed their condolences in a statement. “We are saddened by the passing of one of our guests,” they said, adding that the company is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
The Anthem of the Seas is currently sailing on a 12-day New Zealand itinerary, having departed from Sydney on Sunday, 22 March. During its journey, the ship is scheduled to visit several notable destinations across New Zealand, including Tauranga, Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton-Christchurch, Dunedin, and Fiordland National Park.
Details about the cruise ship, part of Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, indicate it has the capacity to accommodate up to 4,180 passengers alongside a crew of approximately 1,500. With a total of 16 decks and 2,090 staterooms, the vessel is designed to provide a luxurious experience for travellers.
Despite the unfortunate incident, the cruise itinerary is set to continue, with the ship expected to return to Sydney on Friday, 3 April. The company has assured that their priority remains the wellbeing of both guests and crew members during this distressing time.
Cruising has become an increasingly popular form of holidaymaking, with many opting for the scenic and cultural experiences that New Zealand has to offer. However, such incidents highlight the risks inherent in travel, particularly in the context of large vessels where medical emergencies can arise.
The cruise line has reassured the public that they are fully committed to providing support to the authorities and the family affected. As investigations continue, Royal Caribbean Group and New Zealand law enforcement aim to clarify the circumstances leading up to the passenger’s death for the sake of all involved.
As the case unfolds, further updates may emerge on both the investigation and the planned resumption of the cruise itinerary. Passengers and prospective travellers can expect enhanced focus on health and safety measures as the cruise industry navigates the ongoing complexities of leisure travel in a post-pandemic world.
