High School Athlete Dies of Rare Disease After ‘Weeks In and Out of the Hospital’

The family of 17-year-old Waseh Sultani is mourning the loss of their son, who recently passed away after a brave struggle against a rare medical condition known as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Waseh, a resident of Paramus, New Jersey, was a promising student at Paramus High School and an admired member of the school’s football team.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a severe immune disorder that can lead to life-threatening complications. The condition occurs when the immune system becomes overly activated and begins attacking the body’s own tissues. According to medical experts, untreated HLH can cause severe damage to vital organs, including the liver, spleen, and bone marrow.

The diagnosis was shared by Waseh’s family via a GoFundMe campaign, which was established to assist with the mounting medical and funeral expenses. His family revealed in the campaign that he faced the illness with tremendous courage, enduring weeks of hospitalisation. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical professionals and the love of his family, he succumbed to the disorder.
