Authorities in Oregon have announced the identification of the remains of Mark Smith, a young man who went missing in 1974 at the age of 19. His skeletal remains were discovered by a logging crew over five decades later in a remote area near Holcomb Peak, not far from Williams. The forensic identification process has been described as a lengthy collaboration driven by advancements in forensic genetic genealogy.

Forensic anthropologist Hailey Collord-Stalder expressed gratitude that Smith has finally been recovered and identified, enabling his family to find some closure. “This identification reflects years of persistence, scientific collaboration, and the evolving power of forensic genetic genealogy,” she remarked following the announcement by the Oregon State Police.

The mystery surrounding Smith’s disappearance dates back to May 1978 when loggers stumbled upon partial skeletal remains. Initially believed to be those of a girl aged 16 to 18, further investigations failed to identify the remains despite forensic efforts at the time. A piece of clothing, including fragments of a brown sweater, was recovered alongside the remains, but it offered little in the way of identifying the individual.

In 2020, the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office renewed its efforts by sending the remains to the University of North Texas for DNA analysis. It was during this process that it was determined that the remains belonged to a male. Despite the reinvigorated investigation, no matches were established with known missing persons.
To further the investigation, the medical examiner’s office partnered with DNA Labs International, a private laboratory aimed at utilising forensic genetic genealogy to identify unknown individuals. However, initial efforts were fruitless, prompting scientists to continue their work pro bono. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children also extended its resources to assist with the identification process.
Over the years, genealogists managed to establish some genealogical leads, which revealed an ancestry involving a mix of North Atlantic, Baltic, and Western Mediterranean roots. An ancestor from the early 1800s was identified; however, tracing the family line proved challenging, leading to only distant relations being identified despite efforts to conduct whole genome sequencing.
A breakthrough occurred in September 2025 when a newly uploaded DNA sample led genealogists to a family with a missing sibling from the mid-1970s. A subsequent DNA test confirmed that the remains belonged to Mark Smith, born on October 4, 1954. He had left his home in Billings, Montana, seeking adventure at a time when communication methods were far less connected than today.
Smith’s final moments as a living person included a poignant family gathering, as the last known photograph of him was taken at his sister’s wedding in September 1973. Following his disappearance, his family held onto hope, often thinking of him throughout the decades. Authorities have shared that Smith’s sister conveyed to the medical examiner’s office that the family held him in their thoughts every single day during the over fifty years elapsed since his departure.
While no evidence has surfaced to suggest foul play in connection with Smith’s death, the investigation continues into the circumstances that led to his demise. For his family, the resolution of these long-standing questions offers a measure of peace, as they come to terms with the loss that has lingered for so long.
This case is a poignant reminder of the advancements in forensic science that have brought closure to numerous families affected by similar tragedies. As the forensic community continues to innovate and collaborate, the hope remains that many more individuals who have gone missing may soon be identified and returned to their families.
