A distressing incident unfolded at San Francisco International Airport on the evening of Sunday, March 22, when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials detained a mother in front of her young daughter. Footage of the event quickly spread across social media, raising widespread concern and outrage.

The individuals involved have been identified as Angelina Lopez-Jimenez, a Guatemalan national, and her nine-year-old daughter, Wendy Godinez-Lopez. They were en route to catch a flight to Miami to visit a family member when the arrest took place around 10 p.m. in Terminal 3, as reported by various news outlets including the New York Times.
In one of the TikTok videos depicting the event, Lopez-Jimenez can be seen in tears as officers attempt to place handcuffs on her. Meanwhile, a bystander, who had recorded the incident, is heard pressing for the officers’ badge numbers, though they seemingly refused to comply with the request. The heartbreaking scene also featured Wendy visibly distressed and in tears, having witnessed her mother’s apprehension.
Witnesses indicate that the situation escalated when Lopez-Jimenez reportedly resisted walking, prompting officers to place her in a wheelchair and transport her away from the scene. This disturbing display has prompted a significant public reaction, with many expressing sympathy for the young girl left crying alone in the airport.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later confirmed the arrest in a social media post, referring to both individuals as “illegal aliens”. The statement further clarified that the pair had a final removal order from an immigration judge dating back to 2019. Notably, the announcement came just a day after President Donald Trump had suggested deploying ICE agents to assist with long lines at airports due to staffing shortages caused by a government shutdown. The incident at San Francisco International Airport, however, was not explicitly linked to these broader immigration enforcement measures at that time.
The DHS communicated that during transport to the airport’s international terminal for processing, Lopez-Jimenez had attempted to flee and resisted the officers. They also stated their intention to expedite the repatriation of Lopez-Jimenez and Wendy back to Guatemala.

Lopez-Jimenez and Wendy had reportedly been residing in Contra Costa County, California. While she had entered the country illegally, reports indicate that Lopez-Jimenez does not have a prior criminal record, according to local congressional representatives.
In a public statement, the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) confirmed that they had responded to a 911 call but refrained from providing specific details about the individuals involved. They emphasised their adherence to local policies that prevent them from participating in federal civil immigration enforcement.
San Francisco’s Mayor, Daniel Lurie, expressed his dismay at the event, characterising it as troubling for many residents. In an additional statement, he reiterated the city’s commitment to keeping local law enforcement separate from federal immigration operations, reinforcing that these policies are designed to ensure public safety and will remain unchanged during his tenure.
Following the incident, Lopez-Jimenez was reportedly placed in a holding room at the airport before being checked into a hotel in McAllen, Texas, the next day. Reports indicate that she and her daughter were set to take a flight back to Guatemala shortly thereafter.
