A tragic kayaking incident in Tomales Bay, California, has resulted in the death of a 37-year-old woman, while her male companion was rescued, after their vessel capsized under challenging conditions. The accident occurred on Saturday, March 21, drawing emergency responders to the scene in the early evening.

Reports from the Marin County Emergency Command Centre indicated that the duo was spotted in the water near Mendoza Beach at approximately 6:10 p.m. local time. The victim has been identified as Brigitte Manspeaker, based on information from local news outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle and SFGate. According to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), Manspeaker was discovered facing down in the water, approximately 200 yards from their overturned kayak, and was being carried away by the outgoing tide.
Rescue operations were promptly initiated, with first responders employing a longline to bring Manspeaker back to shore. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, she was later transported by helicopter to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The male companion, who described himself as Manspeaker’s boyfriend, managed to cling to the kayak during the incident. He reported to authorities that she had inadvertently slipped out of her life jacket amidst the chaos. Both he and a dog accompanying them were rescued by SCSO personnel from a helicopter that responded to the emergency call within 12 minutes. In footage released by the authorities, the man is seen clinging to an orange kayak, while the dog swims alongside.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, characterised by high winds and significant swells, the rescue operation was particularly challenging. The SCSO employed a 100-foot longline for the man’s extraction, ensuring he could be safely brought back to shore despite the rough waters.
