According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Tocci had entered the water with a fellow Holy Cross student when their canoe overturned. While Tocci did not survive, his friend was rescued from the lake after calling for help. A nearby resident heard the cries and bravely used a paddleboat to bring the surviving student back to safety.
Tocci was last seen around 9.50 PM on that Saturday evening, prompting a search operation that began shortly thereafter. The extensive search effort, involving several emergency response entities, continued for two days before authorities discovered Tocci’s body on Monday around 3 PM. The incident has deeply affected the local community, especially those connected to the College of the Holy Cross.
The college issued a heartfelt statement offering condolences to Tocci’s family, friends, classmates, professors, and all who knew him. “The prayers of the entire Holy Cross community are with Dominick’s family,” the statement read. It also confirmed that the second individual involved in the canoe incident is a fellow student at the university and expressed gratitude that this individual had been accounted for.
