He Crashed His Car and Kicked ‘Random’ Woman to Death, Then Laughed When Shown Footage

A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment following the brutal murder of a 56-year-old woman in Leicester. Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu was convicted on 23 March 2025 for the killing of Nila Patel, who died two days after being violently assaulted. The court heard that Ahanonu, who had been driving under the influence of cannabis, caused an accident before attacking Patel in what has been described as a random act of violence.

The tragic incident unfolded in June 2024 when Ahanonu was behind the wheel of his car. After briefly colliding with a curb near a bus stop, he continued driving erratically, eventually veering onto the wrong side of the road. His vehicle ultimately crashed and flipped over. As bystanders attempted to assist him, Ahanonu managed to extricate himself from the car and fled the scene on foot.

Patel, who had just disembarked from a bus, was walking home on the road where the crash occurred. Witnesses stated that Ahanonu initiated a violent attack on her, which included punching, kicking, and stamping on her as she fell to the ground. Authorities later confirmed that Ahanonu did not have any prior acquaintance with Patel, making the assault all the more incomprehensible and horrifying.

Following the incident, police discovered that Ahanonu’s vehicle contained dealer bags of cannabis, indicating that he had been involved in drug distribution. During his police interview, which included viewing footage of the crash, Ahanonu appeared to be in disbelief about his actions, expressing regret and confusion. He was recorded laughing at one point, stating, “If I don’t laugh, I cry, I’m in so much pain right now.” He later pleaded with investigators for another look at the footage of the attack, repeatedly claiming he could not recall the details of the incident.

Medics transported Patel to a hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries, including a fractured skull and a significant brain injury. Her family reflected on her character, describing her as a “beautiful, vibrant soul” who was cherished by those who knew her. The loss of Nila Patel has left a deep impact on her loved ones, with her family expressing devastation over the violent manner of her death.

In her statement following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Emma Matts characterised the assault as a horrific and unprovoked attack by a stranger on a kind and gentle woman. She highlighted how Patel was simply making her way home when she was attacked, emphasising the senselessness of the violence.

The judicial outcome for Ahanonu sees him facing a minimum of 21 years and six months behind bars. His conviction for murder was accompanied by additional charges including dangerous driving, possession of drugs with intent to supply, and assaulting an emergency worker, all of which contributed to the severity of his sentence.
