In a heartwarming video that has captured millions of viewers across social media, employees at Mychal’s Learning Place in Hawthorne, California, have embraced the viral “accomplishment cake” TikTok trend. This initiative aimed to spotlight the achievements of individuals with developmental disabilities and promote awareness during Disability Awareness Month.

The nonprofit, dedicated to supporting youth and young adults with developmental disabilities through job training and life-skills programmes, is home to Mychal’s Café—a social enterprise offering hands-on experience in a real café environment. Jillian Zalys and Hanna Stevins, two members of the Mychal’s Learning Place team, decided to recreate the trend, believing it would serve as a powerful medium to celebrate the personal milestones of their employees.
In creating the video, Zalys and Stevins invited team members of Mychal’s Café, including Elsie, Caelyn, Domonic, Kate, and Darius, to share their successes. The initiative not only highlighted individual growth but also aimed to challenge societal perspectives on the capabilities of people with disabilities. “By having our employees share their personal growth, we celebrate their achievements and show the many ways individuals with disabilities are capable, driven and continually growing,” said Zalys, the programme’s development and special events manager.
The filming process was laden with emotion as participants openly celebrated each accomplishment. “There’s already a strong culture of support here at Mychal’s, where our students and employees celebrate each other’s growth,” noted Zalys. “This just amplified that. Watching everyone add their accomplishments to the muffin and then step back to celebrate together—it was filled with pride and excitement.”
Some employees have celebrated over a decade with Mychal’s Learning Place, while others, like Darius, are newer to the team, having only recently begun job training. “It’s amazing to see their journeys celebrated in such a joyful way,” remarked Zalys, highlighting the inspiring trajectory of individuals flourishing in their roles.
To coincide with Disability Awareness Month, the team aimed to inspire local businesses to embrace inclusivity in hiring. An invitation was extended through the video’s description for Los Angeles employers to consider creating inclusive workplaces. Following its release, the video garnered an impressive response online, surpassing 2 million views and attracting enthusiastic comments from viewers.
“The response from the online community was amazing, and internally, it was such a proud moment for our organisation,” explained Stevins. “The employees featured in the video were thrilled to see how many people connected with their stories online. They take great pride in sharing their accomplishments, and being part of such a supportive community means a lot to them.”
According to the team, the importance of publicly sharing such stories cannot be overstated. “Publicly sharing goals and dreams is empowering,” they emphasised. “It gives individuals with disabilities the chance to celebrate their successes, set new goals, and be recognised for their talents. These stories inspire others, break down misconceptions, and showcase the incredible potential of every individual.”
Through such initiatives, Mychal’s Learning Place hopes to convey a meaningful message about the significance of inclusion. “We hope people see that inclusion truly matters and that individuals with disabilities are capable and deserve the same opportunities,” they stated. “Their successes are worth celebrating at every stage. Watching our team celebrate each other’s accomplishments highlights the power of support, encouragement and community—showing what’s possible when someone is given the opportunity.”
