In a troubling development regarding the ongoing disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that he has retracted a request for specific surveillance footage, as the accuracy of a key image came into question. The image in question, which was initially believed to provide vital clues, may not have been taken on the date previously communicated by Google.

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC’s *Today* show co-host Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, on February 1. Officers suspect she was kidnapped by a masked individual in the early hours of that morning. Surveillance footage from her doorbell camera reportedly captured the suspect tampering with the device around 2 a.m.

Authorities began scrutinising surveillance videos weeks after Nancy’s disappearance, piecing together events they hoped would lead them to her whereabouts. They also issued requests to locals for any footage from January 11, between 9 p.m. and midnight, and from January 31 between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. These dates were deemed crucial as investigators believed the suspect may have visited Nancy’s home prior to her abduction. Unfortunately, despite extensive investigation, authorities have yet to unearth any new leads.
Sheriff Nanos has since elaborated on why the January 11 footage was significant, only to later clarify that the information he received had changed. Initially, Google indicated to the Sheriff that an arresting image of the suspect, shown without a backpack, had been captured on January 11, but this claim was later revised, citing the ambiguity surrounding the date.
The footage, which was disclosed by the FBI’s Phoenix office on February 10, shows a person in a ski mask approaching the front door to Nancy’s residence, raising further questions about the potential premeditation behind the kidnapping. Sheriff Nanos explained that the surveillance video had been extracted from “residual data located in backend systems,” suggesting the investigation had rigorously analysed the technical aspects of the footage.
While discussing the case, Nanos expressed a level of certainty regarding the motives behind the kidnapping. “We believe we know why the kidnapper did this, and we believe that it was targeted, but we’re not 100% sure of that,” he remarked in a recent interview. His comments highlight the ongoing complexity of the investigation, as authorities grapple with both emotional and practical challenges.
In addition to the video evidence, detectives are also examining DNA samples obtained from the Guthrie home, which have reportedly matched Nancy’s own DNA. This critical finding, which includes traces of blood found on the porch, has provided investigators with a glimmer of hope that it may direct them towards a suspect.
The urgency surrounding the case is amplified by a substantial reward being offered. Initially, the FBI announced a $100,000 reward for information that leads to Nancy’s safe return or an arrest. In a recent effort to gather further community support, Savannah and her family have increased this sum to $1 million and donated an additional $500,000 to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
The Guthrie family continues to encourage the public to remain vigilant, particularly concerning the key dates leading up to Nancy’s disappearance. In a heartfelt message, they implored individuals to search their memories from the evenings of January 31 and February 1, and also the late night of January 11.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have pertinent information related to Nancy’s case to come forward. Tips can be directed to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.
As the investigation unfolds, both the local community and the nation at large remain on high alert, hoping for a positive resolution to a case that has moved many to tears. The search for answers continues, as Nancy’s loved ones grapple with the uncertainty and the deep concern that accompanies her unexplained absence.
