A young woman from Yorkshire, Amber Garland, has bravely opened up about the devastating losses she faced after her two newborn sons died, possibly due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), within a year of each other.
At just 19 years old, Garland found herself navigating unimaginable grief after losing both boys. Her first son, Hugo, was born prematurely in April 2024, arriving via emergency C-section at just 29 weeks. Despite early complications, Hugo flourished in the weeks that followed, delighting his family as he reached developmental milestones and gained weight.

In an interview, Garland described the joy she experienced as a mother. “When I first got pregnant with Hugo, it wasn’t planned but he was wanted,” she said, recalling how her initial trepidation quickly turned to confidence in her parenting abilities. “He was my entire world,” she expressed, reflecting on the bond they developed during their brief time together.
However, that world was shattered just three months after Hugo’s birth. One morning, Garland found her son unresponsive. “His face was turning blue,” she recalled, her emotions still raw from the tragedy. Emergency services were called, but Hugo was pronounced dead, with SIDS cited as the cause of death—a common phenomenon that typically occurs during sleep, leaving families devastated and seeking answers.
Garland said she felt trapped in a nightmare, forcing herself to confront a reality she had never anticipated. “How can you go from having everything to having nothing in a matter of minutes?” she lamented. The loss was compounded by the fact that she had only recently discovered she was pregnant with a second child.
A new journey commenced when Hudson, her second son, was born in January 2025, merely five months after Hugo’s death. Hudson also arrived prematurely at 29 weeks, and Garland described the anxiety of bringing him home. “Me and my partner never slept. I was sheltering him,” she said, highlighting the immense pressure she felt as a parent and the relentless worry that clouded her existence.
Despite her vigilance, tragedy struck again. Just a week before Hudson’s unexpected death, Garland had sought medical help for him due to a runny nose and cough. However, doctors reassured her that it was merely her anxiety manifesting since Hugo’s passing. Tragically, in the early hours of 13 May 2025, Garland discovered that Hudson was not breathing. Emergency intervention was futile, and she was faced with yet another unimaginable loss.
“Once again, I couldn’t believe this was happening,” she stated, her voice heavy with sorrow. “I was numb. I wouldn’t wish this upon my worst enemy.” While awaiting the official autopsy results for Hudson, Garland was informed that SIDS was likely to blame for his death as well.
Now, as she grapples with the dual tragedies, Garland has actively sought ways to channel her heartbreak into positivity. “Instead of making my grief anger, I want to turn it into something positive,” she explained. Engaging in charity work has become her outlet, as she strives to assist others who find themselves in similar heartbreaking situations.
Research into SIDS continues, with medical professionals suggesting that underlying issues in an infant’s brain, which control breathing and sleep, may contribute to the phenomenon. Factors related to premature birth and respiratory infections during infancy have also been implicated.
Amber Garland’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of unfathomable heartache. Through her journey, she aims to raise awareness about SIDS and offer hope to other bereaved families, ensuring that her sons’ legacies live on through her advocacy and compassion.
