The intriguing find was made by Mike Scott, an artist and photographer who lives near St. Cyrus, just south of Aberdeen, while out walking his dogs.

Scott’s dog, Maggie, was the first to spot the bottle as it washed ashore. Describing the moment, Scott recounted, “It was a really dark glass bottle with a lid and something inside it.” Upon closer inspection, it became apparent that the bottle contained a message protected in a zip-lock bag.

Upon retrieving the bottle, Scott initially thought it had been cast into the sea relatively close to the shore. However, as he delved into the contents, he discovered that the message was written in French, revealing its remarkable journey from across the Atlantic Ocean. The note, dated August 2024, was penned by Annie Chaisson, who indicated that it had been released while she was aboard a ferry travelling from Prince Edward Island to the Isles-de-la-Madeleine in Quebec, Canada.

The journey of the bottle, as Scott eloquently pointed out on social media, was extraordinary: “So the small glass bottle has survived two winters at sea, travelling from the east coast of Canada, across the North Atlantic, over the top of Scotland and down into the North Sea for us to find at St. Cyrus!”

Annie Chaisson’s message included a simple request for the finder to get in touch with her via Facebook. Inspired by the serendipity of the find, Scott, alongside his wife, promptly reached out to the message’s author but has not yet received a response. In an effort to facilitate communication, they also contacted a Canadian news outlet, hoping to raise awareness of their find.

Scott expressed his awe at the bottle’s remarkable journey. “For it to actually land on this beach is quite something,” he told reporters. “That bottle had a hell of a journey.” This sentiment captures the fascination many have for the ocean’s mysteries and the stories it can carry.
