A recent discovery in South Korea has unveiled a new species of dinosaur, named Doolysaurus huhmini, providing invaluable insight into the evolutionary history of plant-eating dinosaurs. The fossil, which dates back to the mid-Cretaceous period, was identified through a collaborative effort between researchers from the University of Texas at Austin and the Korean Dinosaur Research Center.

The juvenile fossil, primarily comprised of cranial material, offers a rare glimpse into the development and characteristics of this prehistoric creature. These well-preserved remains enhance our understanding of how such dinosaurs grew and thrived in their environment. As noted by Jongyun Jung, a visiting postdoctoral researcher at UT Austin and a key figure in the excavation, this discovery is significant not only for its scientific value but also for its cultural connection. The species name, Doolysaurus, is inspired by the beloved South Korean cartoon character Dooly the Little Dinosaur, as well as Professor Min Hu, a respected scientist who has contributed greatly to paleontology in Korea.
Dr. Julia Clarke, a professor at UT Austin’s Jackson School of Geosciences, emphasized the importance of this find in an interview with Texas Standard. The process of confirming the species involved meticulous comparisons of the skull with those of known species. “It was a very exciting moment,” Clarke noted, highlighting the thrill of identifying new life forms from millions of years ago.

Utilising state-of-the-art CT scanning technology, the research team was able to uncover a nearly complete skull concealed within a hard rock block. Jung described this moment as “one of the very important moments in my life,” reflecting on the blend of technology and traditional excavation methods that led to this remarkable discovery.
In terms of physical characteristics, Doolysaurus is believed to be about the size of a small dog or a large cat. This diminutive stature adds another dimension to our understanding of mid-Cretaceous ecosystems in Asia. According to Clarke, the discovery of Doolysaurus provides evidence for evolutionary connections between species in Asia and North America, thereby filling gaps in the broader narrative of dinosaur evolution.
The site where Doolysaurus was found contains additional fossilised materials, including dinosaur egg fossils and bird eggs, suggesting an area rich in prehistoric life. Jung has expressed optimism regarding future discoveries at this site, indicating that more diverse dinosaurs and potentially new species could be uncovered as explorations continue.
This discovery not only enhances our understanding of early herbivorous dinosaurs but also illustrates the significance of international collaboration in scientific research.
