Directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord recently shed light on an unexpected source of inspiration during the filming of their new science fiction project, *Project Hail Mary*. The duo spoke to PEOPLE at the film’s premiere in New York City, sharing how Ryan Gosling’s daughters played a delightful role in the production process.

The film, which marks a notable entry in the genre, features Gosling as Dr. Ryland Grace, who embarks on an interstellar mission. Among the aspects highlighted by the directors were the creative contributions of Gosling’s daughters, Esmeralda Amada, 11, and Amada Lee, 9. Miller and Lord described the young girls as “delightful” and “creative geniuses”, emphasising their involvement in the film’s development.
During the conversations, it was revealed that there are moments in *Project Hail Mary* where Gosling’s natural reactions to his character’s alien companion, Rocky, were directly inspired by the voices of his daughters. Miller recounted a particular scene where the production team had various crew members provide voiceovers for the character of Rocky, which allowed Gosling to respond authentically in his performances.
Lord explained how the creative atmosphere on set allowed for the girls to lend their voices, recalling, “We brought them in and were like, ‘Just do a silly voice.’ And he laughed so purely and honestly that his reactions are in the movie.” Their spontaneous contributions not only injected humour into Gosling’s performance but also infused genuine emotion into the film.
The family life of Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes has largely been kept under wraps since they began their relationship in 2011. However, Mendes made a rare public appearance at the *Project Hail Mary* premiere, posing for photographs and showing her support for the project. The couple’s first joint appearance in over a decade took place recently on *The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon*, where they showcased their familial bond.
As Gosling stepped into the role and carried the creative vision, Miller elaborated on the actor’s influence during the production. “He chose us,” Miller explained. “He knew what movie he wanted to make and he was so playful and full of ideas.” Beyond his performance, the directors praised Gosling for his ability to inspire those around him, transforming the atmosphere on set.
In their lighthearted conversation, Lord didn’t hold back on praising Gosling’s attributes, calling him “cute, handsome, and smart”. Miller humorously interjected, questioning why anyone should be so talented, suggesting that everyone should have their flaws.
The film features a cast that includes not just Gosling, but also Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce. As audiences eagerly await its release, the creative team is optimistic about how the finished product will resonate with viewers.
*Project Hail Mary*, adapted from Andy Weir’s novel, promises to be an engaging sci-fi experience. It is set to hit UK cinemas on Friday, March 20, captivating audiences with its unique blend of humour and heartfelt moments, further enhanced by the unexpected contributions from Gosling’s daughters. As the premiere drew attention to the film’s collaborative spirit, many are left curious about the final portrayal of this extraordinary tale.
