An Illinois woman, who has adopted the moniker “Lucky Lady,” has entered the history books after securing her state’s first Mega Millions jackpot of 2026, amounting to an astonishing $536 million. This colossal win is noted as the second largest ever claimed by an online lottery player.

The winning ticket was purchased on March 10 through the Illinois Lottery’s iLottery platform. The jubilant winner correctly selected the white ball numbers 16, 21, 30, 35, and 65, alongside the gold Mega Ball number 7. Speaking to lottery officials, “Lucky Lady” expressed her disbelief over her monumental win, stating, “I couldn’t believe it. I was shaking and telling myself, ‘This can’t be real.’”

Interestingly, “Lucky Lady” had not originally planned to buy a ticket that day. In fact, she had attempted to make a purchase the previous week but had forgotten to complete the transaction. “I even joked with my boss that day, saying, ‘It wasn’t meant to go through,’” she recounted. However, fate had other plans, and when the opportunity arose again, she opted for a Quick Pick option, randomly selecting numbers until one caught her eye.

That chance number, 16—her favourite—ultimately paved the way for her incredible fortune. Following the deduction of federal and state taxes, she is expected to take home a net sum of $245.6 million. The sense of disbelief lingered, prompting her to have her daughter contact a claim centre for confirmation. Yet even then, she admitted that the reality still felt surreal.
“Lucky Lady” becomes one of only 17 Mega Millions jackpot winners in Illinois since the inception of the game in 2002. With her newfound wealth, she has ambitious plans to turn long-held family dreams into reality. “I’ve always dreamed of buying a new family house with a swimming pool,” she revealed. Additionally, she mentioned upcoming travels, considering a cruise or possibly a trip to Las Vegas for a family gathering.
The March 10 Mega Millions drawing was not just a jackpot event; there were a total of 415,980 winning tickets at various prize levels, resulting in approximately $209.4 million being awarded across the board, excluding the jackpot. This surge of winnings reflects the lottery’s ongoing popularity and the excitement it generates among players.
Prior to this win, the last Mega Millions jackpot was claimed on December 2, 2025, in New Jersey, making “Lucky Lady’s” jackpot the first of the year. As excitement builds, the next drawing is set for March 20, leaving many hopeful participants eager for their shot at fortune.
