In an innovative twist on traditional cruising, Villa Vie Residences has unveiled a remarkable opportunity for those looking to make long-term travel their lifestyle. Dubbed the “Odyssey,” this unique cruise ship offers an unparalleled experience—an astonishing 15-year journey that enables residents to explore the globe without ever leaving their ‘home’ on the water.

Mikael Petterson, the founder of Villa Vie Residences, explained the concept behind the Odyssey to *PEOPLE*, stating that the experience transcends the notion of a mere vacation. Instead, it represents a radical reimagining of how we approach living. With an evolving itinerary that refreshes every 3.5 years, residents can expect a fresh backdrop to their everyday lives, providing a sense of both freedom and community that Petterson believes is rare to find elsewhere.
“Our residents wake up to a new backyard every day,” Petterson remarked, emphasising that the Odyssey allows individuals to explore the world while enjoying the comforts of home. “What if you never had to go home because you were already there? The Odyssey turns the entire world into your neighbourhood.”
The ship accommodates various living options, catering to different preferences and budgets. The entry-level “Inside Villa” is priced from £129,999, while the more spacious “Villa Suite” commands a price of £439,999. Residents will also need to pay a monthly fee that ranges between £2,000 and £10,000, based on their chosen accommodation. This fee includes conveniences such as housekeeping and laundry services.
Unlike conventional cruise accommodations, where guests often treat their staterooms with caution, residents aboard the Odyssey are encouraged to personalise their living spaces. The website highlights the freedom to decorate as desired, host guests, and even take the option to rent or resell their villa in the future.
Dining aboard the Odyssey is a varied affair. Residents can frequent the main dining venue that features a daily changing menu on a 14-day cycle or choose from various other dining options, including a casual café, pub, and bar. The culinary experience is designed to cater to the diverse tastes of those on board.
Further enhancing the all-inclusive experience, the Odyssey boasts a range of amenities, such as a lounge, library, fitness centre, spa, and a swimming pool. For those looking to remain connected, the ship even includes a business centre equipped with private offices and high-speed internet, making it easier for residents to maintain their professional commitments from the high seas.
The current sailing route spans the stunning coasts of Australia, New Zealand, and Indonesia, with the current itinerary running from 20th February to 30th April. Following this, the ship’s next segment will include stops in various Asian countries, including Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, and the Philippines, from 1st May to 31st July.
Capacity on board is managed thoughtfully; although the vessel can accommodate up to 720 passengers, Petterson ensures that the maximum number is limited to 600 at any given time. Passengers, predominantly an older demographic with an average age of 59, range from their thirties to those in their nineties—a reflection of the unique lifestyle choice the Odyssey represents. Additionally, residents can bring their feline companions along, though dogs are prohibited, and can also take advantage of a relaxed policy allowing them to bring their own alcohol on board.
Further enhancing the security and wellbeing of all residents, a full-time doctor is stationed on the ship, ensuring that medical needs are promptly addressed.
The Odyssey by Villa Vie Residences marks a new chapter in life at sea, appealing to those dreaming of a nomadic lifestyle without the traditional constraints of land-based living. With its unique offerings and strong sense of community, this remarkable venture could redefine the cruise experience for many.
