Miley Cyrus has recently shared her reflections on her iconic role in the Disney Channel series “Hannah Montana,” a pivotal moment in her career that not only shaped her identity but also had a significant influence on her family life. Cyrus portrayed Miley Stewart, the alter ego of Hannah Montana, alongside her father Billy Ray Cyrus, who played her on-screen dad, Robby Ray Stewart. In her conversation, Miley took the opportunity to address speculation surrounding her family’s dependence on her rising fame and success. She firmly stated that her parents did not rely on her celebrity status for financial stability.

“My parents didn’t need me to be famous to survive or to be stable,” Miley asserted. She emphasised that, unlike many child stars, her situation was different. “What happens to a lot of these kids is their parents want it more than they do, or the kids become responsible for the entire income of the family. That was never my job. Every penny I ever made went into my bank account because my parents were good,” she explained, underscoring a sense of autonomy in her early career.

Miley’s reflections also highlighted the protective role her father played throughout her time on the show. She recalled how their dressing rooms were connected and how her grandmother, Loretta “Mammie” Finley, managed her fan club activities from a nearby kitchen-turned-office. “My dad was on set every single day, so there was nothing that could happen that he wouldn’t know about,” she said, expressing gratitude for the supportive environment her family created around her.

The journey to securing her role in “Hannah Montana” was not without hurdles. Initially, Miley was turned down following her first audition, as the network opted to pursue a different direction. However, a year later, she was called back to Los Angeles for a follow-up audition, which ultimately led to her landing the life-changing role.

As the casting process for the rest of Hannah’s family began, Tish Cyrus, Miley’s mother, remembered a Disney casting director joking about her husband’s suitability for the role of Robby Ray Stewart. “Too bad we can’t afford her real dad,” the casting director quipped, to which Tish responded, “Oh, maybe you can,” recognising it as a chance for the family to spend more time together.

Despite Billy Ray’s eagerness to land the role, he nearly jeopardised his own audition. Miley recounted how her father, known for his kindness, began encouraging other fathers waiting outside the auditions to apply for the role. “He goes out into the parking lot, grabs other dads, brings them into Disney and is like, ‘You should hire this guy! He’s a great actor!’” Miley recounted, revealing the humorous complexity of the audition process. Her mother was reportedly anxiously imploring him to focus on his own chances.

Eventually, Billy Ray secured the role, appearing in an impressive 99 episodes across the series’ run. Miley fondly described the unique bond they shared, stating, “It was so obvious, after all the other dads, that you can’t fake the kind of connection that we have. The inside jokes, the nicknames, the handshakes, singing the songs together. It was a TKO.”

In anticipation of the 20th anniversary of “Hannah Montana,” a special commemorative programme is set to premiere on March 24, coinciding exactly with the original series’ launch on Disney Channel two decades ago. This milestone not only highlights the enduring legacy of the show but also serves as a reminder of the profound impact it had on Miley’s life and career.
