Rachael Leigh Cook has opened up about her experience working alongside Jonathan Taylor Thomas on the set of their 1995 film, *Tom and Huck*. In a recent episode of Danielle Fishel’s podcast, *Teen Beat*, Cook, now 46, reflected on her time with Thomas, who was a prominent teen idol during the 1990s due to his role in the popular sitcom *Home Improvement*. Despite the adoration that surrounded her co-star, Cook confessed she never succumbed to the so-called “JTT mania”.

While Jonathan Taylor Thomas, now 44, graced the covers of numerous teen magazines in that era, Cook admitted in the podcast that she approached their collaboration with a perspective unfettered by the hype. “I’m so relieved I hadn’t seen *Home Improvement* … so luckily I didn’t have the mania,” she remarked. She vividly described him as possessing a depth of character that seemed unusual for his years, noting, “Somehow he had the soul of a … touring jazz musician.” Renfro tragically passed away from a heroin overdose in 2008, a loss that Cook found difficult to fathom. Reflecting on his untimely death, she stated, “In some ways when people are like, ‘Can you believe it?’ I’m like, ‘In some ways, yeah.'”

Cook and Thomas, she acknowledged, spent less time together outside of filming compared to her camaraderie with Renfro. “I would have welcomed a friendship with Jonathan,” she said, noting that Thomas often chose to be with his family during breaks. In contrast, she and Renfro bonded over late-night outings to places like the Waffle House, labelling their adventures in Huntsville, Alabama, as “crazy” yet “awesome.”

The film *Tom and Huck*, which was based on Mark Twain’s classic novel *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer*, featured Thomas as the titular character, while Renfro played his loyal friend Huck Finn, alongside Cook as the spirited Becky Thatcher.
