Ky. Man Allegedly Hunted Down Wife with Loaded Rifle, Told Police She Was Trying to Kill Him: ‘Tylenol In My Deviled Eggs’

A Kentucky man, Ronald Coots, aged 72, faces multiple criminal charges following an alarming incident involving his wife, Betty Coots. Authorities have filed charges against Ronald for burglary, wanton endangerment, terroristic threatening, and menacing following an encounter that escalated into a life-threatening situation.

The incident unfolded on March 13, when Betty Coots dialled emergency services to report that her husband was outside their home in Phelps, armed with a shotgun and threatening harm. She expressed fears for her own safety, claiming that Ronald believed she had poisoned him. According to a police citation, Ronald’s accusation stemmed from the allegation that Betty had put Tylenol in the deviled eggs he had consumed.

On the day of the incident, Betty had locked Ronald out of their home. In an attempt to gain entry, he allegedly broke a window by punching it, allowing himself inside. Betty, meanwhile, managed to escape to the bathroom, where she sought refuge until police arrived.

When law enforcement officials reached the scene, they initiated a conversation with Ronald, who reportedly claimed, “She is trying to kill me putting Tylenol in my deviled eggs.” His erratic statements raised further concerns about his mental state, as he was armed and had displayed threatening behaviour.

Upon locating Betty in the bathroom, Ronald allegedly instructed her to exit the house, stating he did not wish to harm her indoors. She complied but seized the opportunity to lock him out again once he stepped outside. Surveillance footage from a ring camera captured the moment Ronald turned and aimed the shotgun at the door, demanding Betty to reopen it, a detail that demonstrated the volatility of the situation.

Police assert that during their interaction, Ronald was initially reluctant to disarm himself. When he eventually relinquished the gun, he reiterated his belief that his wife intended to kill him. Officers observed a visible injury on his arm, prompting them to provide medical attention.

As they investigated further, police discovered evidence of Ronald’s chaotic attempt to retrieve Betty from the bathroom. They noted a blood trail throughout the house leading from the broken window and further into the interior where Ronald sought out his wife, culminating in a bloody handprint on the bathroom door.

Remarkably, at the time of his arrest, Ronald was found with five rounds in the shotgun’s chamber. Following the incident, he required medical treatment for his injuries and was subsequently taken into custody at the Pike County Detention Center.

Ronald Coots made his first court appearance on March 16, where a judge ordered him to be held without bond. At present, he has not been assigned legal representation and is scheduled to return to court on March 26 for further proceedings.
