Grandfather Killed After Being Pinned Underneath Ambulance That Crashed into Him and His Grandson on the Highway

A tragic incident on a highway in Oconee County, Georgia, has led to the death of a 66-year-old grandfather and left his teenage grandson with serious injuries. John Carter Martin was struck by an ambulance while he attempted to assist his grandson, Connor Lee Schoon, after Schoon’s vehicle suffered a breakdown.

The incident occurred at night on 15 March, as both men were outside their white Toyota Camry. According to a statement from a Georgia State Patrol spokesperson, Martin had parked his vehicle to help Schoon, who is just 17 years old. The family has confirmed that Schoon is a junior at Winder-Barrow High School.

Witnesses reported poor driving conditions as fog and rain persisted at the time of the accident. A local bystander, Jennifer Wise, recounted her experience upon arriving at the scene. His grandson, Connor Schoon, did not escape unscathed; he was airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Arthur M. Blank Hospital. Following several hours of surgery, Schoon was treated for a range of injuries, including a broken collarbone and a lacerated spleen. As of now, he is reported to be in stable condition according to information shared by his family through a crowdfunding platform.
