Ona Vicente, a wedding photographer and co-founder of Blue Haus Photography, has gained considerable attention for her insights into the dynamics of couples she captures through her lens. In a recent TikTok that has gone viral, Vicente shared her observations on tell-tale signs that indicate a couple’s relationship may be in trouble. Drawing from her extensive experience photographing numerous weddings and engagements in New York and New Jersey, she emphasises a unique perspective on couple interactions that goes beyond the usual focus on wedding attire and décor.

According to Vicente, her intuition about relationship dynamics has developed significantly over her years in the business. She describes feeling a “gut instinct” about a couple’s compatibility within just an hour of their shoot. “It’s a general sense of resentment or being out of sync that is difficult to articulate for those unfamiliar with these emotional cues,” she explained. This keen ability to read the room helps her identify underlying issues that may affect couples as they prepare for one of the biggest days of their lives.

The inspiration for her viral TikTok came from a couple she had recently photographed, who were intrigued by her assertion that she could often predict whether a relationship would ultimately fail. Vicente candidly acknowledges that some of the signs she noted may seem trivial on the surface, yet she believes they indicate more profound issues within the relationship.

In her video, Vicente highlighted a notable sign: the manner in which a couple presents themselves at a shoot. “If a couple arrives dressed for two completely different occasions, it signals to me that they haven’t communicated about the shoot at all,” she remarked. This lack of preparation and communication can be indicative of deeper disconnects in the relationship, suggesting that one partner may not be fully invested in the process.
Another red flag Vicente observes is when couples argue or bicker in her presence. She reflects, “If you feel comfortable discussing serious matters or fighting in front of a stranger, it raises concerns about your relationship dynamics.” This comfort with confrontation can suggest desensitisation to conflict, which is often unhealthy in partnerships.
Mean-spirited teasing is also a significant concern for Vicente. She notes that when couples make derogatory remarks about each other, even if these comments are intended as jokes, it can undermine confidence. Vicente often finds herself in the position of needing to bolster the confidence of one partner, especially when insecure comments are directed at confident individuals. “Your role should be to support and uplift your partner, especially during moments of vulnerability,” she advised.
Vicente also warns against couples displaying frustration during photo shoots, especially when things do not go to plan. “I’ve witnessed couples becoming snippy or even aggressive with one another if they struggle with poses,” she said. Such negative interactions can harm the atmosphere of the shoot and often appear in the final images. Instead, she encourages couples to approach the experience with humour and kindness.
While Vicente does not typically follow up with clients post-shoot, she has observed enough situations to understand the often fragile nature of romantic relationships. She has seen engagements dissolve after public proposals, couples requesting the removal of their photos after breakups, or even weddings that never transpired. “It’s part of the job, and though it’s disheartening, I’ve come to accept it,” she admitted.
Following the TikTok’s popularity, Vicente reported receiving numerous inquiries from those eager to book her services, hoping for her to evaluate their relationships. She also found solidarity amongst fellow wedding vendors who agree that such intuition about couple dynamics can be both a gift and a curse in their line of work.
Vicente emphasises that her observations were not intended to be overly serious, but rather to spark conversations about unhealthy relationship dynamics. She expressed a desire to have received similar insights during her own past experiences in unsatisfactory relationships. “I wish someone had openly addressed the concerns we both felt but were unable to voice,” she shared. Ultimately, Vicente hopes her expertise can help others navigate their relationships more effectively, fostering healthier connections and better outcomes as they embark on the journey of marriage.
