Lost Kayaker Became Disoriented and Stayed on Sandbank Overnight Before Being Rescued by Helicopter

A 73-year-old man has expressed his gratitude for being alive following a dramatic kayaking incident that left him stranded overnight on a sandbank off the southern coast of Australia. Goran Radic found himself in a precarious situation after becoming disoriented during a kayaking trip near Middle Beach, a small seaside town approximately 25 miles north of Adelaide.

Radic embarked on his kayaking adventure on Tuesday, March 17, but failed to return home, prompting his concerned family to alert the South Australia Police. The authorities began their search efforts later that evening, but initial attempts to locate Radic did not yield any results.

Sharing his experience, Radic recalled the moment his confusion set in. “The moment I didn’t see the entrance into the channel, I knew something was different,” he stated. He remained calm despite the circumstances, though he had left his mobile phone in his vehicle, which could have aided in contacting help sooner.

After realising he was lost, Radic attempted to navigate his way to St Kilda, another coastal location situated around 12 miles south of his starting point. Unfortunately, after failing to locate the area, he turned back and opted to spend the night on a sandbank. “I saw the rescue helicopter at some point during the night, but they missed me,” he reported, noting that his life jacket undoubtedly played a crucial role in his survival.

The search was resumed on the following day, Wednesday, March 18, as police continued their efforts to find Radic. By 8:30 a.m. local time, a police helicopter spotted him just over a mile south of Middle Beach. Clinton Daniels, a representative from the SA Ambulance Service Special Operations, described the moment of rescue, stating, “We were able to land on a bank and actually get him to walk across to the aircraft and climb in.”

Daniels praised Radic, noting that he was dressed appropriately for the weather and had spent the night waiting for dawn and assistance. “He’s had a fairly decent ordeal, but he’s doing quite well,” Daniels assured reporters. After being assessed by medical personnel, it was determined that Radic was in good health, and arrangements were made for the recovery of his kayak.

Once his rescue was confirmed, Radic contacted his wife, who expressed immense relief at his safe return. “She’s happy I’m alive, alright, and [asked me] what happened,” he recounted, illustrating the emotional relief felt by his partner following this distressing incident.

Having endured a sleepless night but remained resilient throughout the ordeal, Radic was in high spirits when he returned home. “I’m just happy to be alive and well,” he stated, reflecting on the harrowing experience.
