Cole Sydnor and Charisma Jamison’s journey began under challenging circumstances, transforming adversity into a tale of love, resilience, and inspiration. The two met at the Sheltering Arms Institute rehabilitation facility in December 2017, where they both sought a path toward strength. Jamison worked there as an inpatient therapist while Sydnor used the space as a gym to recover from a life-altering spinal injury.

In 2011, at the age of 16, Sydnor sustained his injury following a diving accident in Virginia’s James River, leaving him a quadriplegic. This life-changing event shaped his perspective on a world that became drastically different from the one he had known as an active teenager. Jamison, 31, and Sydnor, 30, began dating about six years after this life-altering event, discovering a powerful connection despite their varied circumstances as an inter-abled and interracial couple.
Their first date blossomed into a promising relationship, one that was anchored in understanding the unique challenges each faced. Jamison shared the underlying tension she felt as they crossed cultural boundaries within their relationship. “Dating someone who was White was different for me. I was very nervous going into our relationship,” she admitted, reflecting on the potential differences in their backgrounds.
Sydnor also acknowledged the significant shift in his worldview after acquiring a disability, stating, “You rapidly mature, because you have no choice, and you see things a lot differently.” The couple quickly found common ground in discussing their unique adversities and the feelings of being perceived as minorities in society. Their ability to bond over their experiences and support each other created a strong foundation for their relationship.
Once engaged in July 2019 and married in November 2020, the couple faced persistent curiosity from friends and family about their relationship. This interest prompted them to start sharing their lives through YouTube, documenting their experiences and offering a glimpse into their inter-abled love story. Little did they know, their channel, “Roll with Cole and Charisma,” would attract a considerable following, amassing around 1.2 million subscribers.
Jamison was surprised at the rapid growth of their audience, stating that they had no expectations for such widespread engagement. Both she and Sydnor were delighted to share their lives and perspectives, but they also recognised the potential for negative feedback. Hence, they were prepared to confront the harsh realities of the digital public sphere.
The couple has experienced their fair share of negativity, revealing that much of the hatred directed towards them stems from both racism and ableism, often intertwined. Jamison recounted the hurtful assumptions made about their relationship, such as claims that Sydnor had settled for her because of his disability, while she faced similar prejudices regarding her choice of partners. “They would say ‘broken’ — which, I absolutely despise,” she stated.
These toxic comments can weigh heavily on them, yet Sydnor has developed a resilient approach towards negativity over the years. His disability granted him a unique perspective, providing him with the emotional tools to counter judgment with understanding. “A lot of people have ideas about disabled people, and a lot of people start treating you differently,” he noted, emphasising the importance of recognising those misconceptions as others’ biases rather than personal failures.
Jamison has found this journey more arduous, recalling nights spent in tears over cruel comments. Despite the challenges, she has learned to cultivate resilience and self-confidence. “It’s been seven years now, and you learn and you grow thick skin,” she said, affirming that self-belief must come from within.
As their story unfolds, Cole Sydnor and Charisma Jamison remain determined to demonstrate that love and strength exist even in the face of adversity. Their candid sharing on social media not only uplifts their followers but also serves to challenge societal perceptions of love, race, and disability. Their journey serves as a powerful reminder that relationships can flourish and inspire, regardless of the hurdles encountered along the way.
