In an extraordinary turn of events during a routine morning stroll, a Virginia man and his dog managed to save a woman’s life. This remarkable incident transpired in Ashland, where Dan DiCandilo and his beloved canine companion, Gozier, were walking their usual five-mile route.

DiCandilo shared his experience during an interview with local news outlet WWBT, explaining how their walk took an unexpected twist. He remarked, “We’ve been walking five miles a day, every day, for nine years,” and described Gozier as “the child we’ve never had.” Their bond is profound, making the events that unfolded that fateful morning even more significant.

As they made their way along Henry Clay Road, Gozier began barking with unusual urgency. DiCandilo noted that the bark had a “little cry to it” and was different from anything he had heard before. It was this unusual barking that prompted him to pay closer attention to the surroundings.
To his shock, DiCandilo discovered that Gozier was alerting him to an unconscious woman lying on a front lawn. The woman, dressed in a white robe, was not easily visible from the street. Recognising the gravity of the situation, DiCandilo quickly dialled 999 after speaking with the homeowner, as it became clear that the woman did not reside there.
“There was a woman on her back in a white robe, which camouflaged her and made it impossible to see from the road,” DiCandilo revealed. He reiterated how alarming the conditions were, stating that the woman was exposed to the cold outdoors without a hat, gloves, or shoes.
Gozier continued to bark persistently, seemingly trying to rouse the woman from her unconscious state. Thanks to the alertness of Gozier and DiCandilo, first responders arrived promptly to take over. DiCandilo elaborated on the timeline, noting that security footage from a neighbouring house revealed the woman had been on the lawn for several hours prior. “She had been out there for three hours in 15-degree temperatures,” he recounted, adding that they found her at approximately 7:15 am.
Tragically, the woman’s condition was grave, as her body temperature had plummeted to a mere 78 degrees. Despite this, she received immediate medical attention and, according to reports, spent a week in intensive care but ultimately survived. DiCandilo expressed immense pride in Gozier’s instincts, saying, “Dogs are special. They have that sense that we don’t have, and obviously, that was well displayed that morning.”
In recognition of their remarkable act of bravery, the community of Ashland organised a ceremony to honour Gozier on March 3. The event celebrated the bond between the dog and his owner, showcasing not only the capabilities of dogs but also the profound impact they can have in critical situations.
This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the instinctual capabilities of dogs, often enhancing our understanding of loyalty, companionship, and the potential for lives to be saved in unexpected circumstances. DiCandilo’s experience underscores just how crucial the connection between humans and animals can be, especially during life-or-death moments.
