In an inspiring tale of ingenuity and determination, 25-year-old Jessica Holiday from Minnesota has shared her unique journey of establishing her jewellery business while living in her studio apartment. For over two years, Jessica has embraced a rather unconventional living arrangement: sleeping in her closet to maximise the usable space in her compact home.

Reflecting on her experience, Holiday told PEOPLE that she has grown fond of her snug sleeping area. As a child, she would often ask her mother for permission to camp out in the closet, but her requests were denied. Now, as an adult, she relishes this opportunity to create her own ‘fort’ and finds it surprisingly comfortable. “It’s fun using my free will as an adult,” she remarked.
Utilising the main area of her apartment, Holiday focuses her efforts on crafting and storing her jewellery. Her passion for the art has evolved over a span of six years. Initially, she ventured into selling rings online after finishing high school but found herself pivoting to clothing when the jewellery market didn’t meet her expectations. Now, she has returned to her first love, jewellery, and claims that her business is finally “really taking off,” while acknowledging the significant time and effort that has led her to this point.
The entrepreneurial spirit that Holiday embodies was ignited by watching YouTube videos of women creating clay products and managing print businesses. She found the process appealing and thought it was a venture she could embark on during her free time, especially since she was living alone.
Holiday has learned the importance of small, incremental progress throughout her entrepreneurial journey. “Baby steps compound,” she stated, recognising that early frustrations often masked the steady progress she was making. “There have been times I felt like what I was doing wasn’t working, but looking back, it’s the little mundane days that really add up and ultimately lead to success,” she reflected.
Her dedication came at a price in the earlier days of her business. Holiday sold her possessions and lived in a van while honing her jewellery-making skills. After a stint back at her construction job, she sold her van and moved into her current apartment, where she now operates her brand from the comfort of her closet.
Big financial commitments can often be intimidating for budding entrepreneurs, and Holiday experienced those fears firsthand. “Making big investments can be scary, especially when you’re unsure of the returns,” she commented. In those times of doubt, she would scrutinise her purchases, ensuring that her essential living expenses were covered and that she could keep pouring her earnings back into her business.
On her TikTok account, Holiday actively shares her entrepreneurial journey, offering glimpses into her life and the creations she markets. Notably, she began her business with a modest initial investment of just £400, emphasising that every addition to her inventory has been financed through reinvestment of her earnings. “I didn’t want to dip into my normal spending money or savings because I wanted to make sure my necessities were taken care of,” she explained to PEOPLE.
Holiday advises aspiring entrepreneurs to start small and make the most of available resources before spending excessively. “It’s okay to start with what you have,” she encourages, highlighting that an ambitious dream doesn’t necessitate a hefty budget.
Jessica Holiday’s approach illustrates the blend of creativity and practicality required to succeed in the competitive world of small business. Her journey underscores a valuable lesson: that resilience, patience, and thoughtful planning can ultimately lead to fruitful outcomes, even when starting from a closet. This resourcefulness, along with her passion for jewellery, has positioned Holiday as a promising entrepreneur with a bright future ahead.
