Suzette Quintanilla, sister of the late Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, has initiated legal action against the prominent fast fashion retailer Shein. The lawsuit alleges that Shein has been manufacturing and selling merchandise featuring Selena’s likeness without receiving the necessary authorisation from the Quintanilla family.

Court documents filed in the California Central District Court reveal that Suzette’s complaint follows an earlier cease and desist letter sent to Shein by Q Productions, the family’s production company, in August 2025. This letter reportedly highlighted the Quintanilla family’s trademark rights over Selena’s image, which they have been utilising since at least 1989.
The complaint states that despite the Quintanilla family’s explicit demands, Shein continued to offer numerous items for sale, including various T-shirts bearing Selena’s image. The lawsuit cites claims of trademark infringement, unfair competition, and violations of publicity rights. Suzette is seeking both the profits earned from these unauthorised sales and a court order requiring Shein to cease the production and distribution of such merchandise.
In response to these allegations, a spokesperson from Shein indicated that the company had promptly removed the disputed listings from its platform upon becoming aware of the issue and had launched an investigation into the matter. The spokesperson reiterated that Shein mandates its sellers to comply with company policies, particularly regarding adherence to intellectual property rights.
The family’s production company, Q Productions, has established an array of trademarks related to Selena’s name and likeness, encompassing apparel, footwear, and accessories. The Quintanilla family has continuously employed these trademarks over several decades, reinforcing their claim to the rights associated with Selena’s image.

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was tragically murdered in March 1995 at the age of 23, a crime committed by Yolanda Saldívar, who was at that time the president of Selena’s fan club. The confrontation between Selena and Saldívar arose from undisclosed financial concerns, culminating in Selena’s untimely death. Saldívar subsequently received a life sentence, with parole eligibility after 30 years; however, she was recently denied parole in March 2025.
