Nunn, the proprietor of Terry Nunn Photography, shared his findings on Instagram. In a heartfelt post, dated February 17, he recounted his experience of returning to the area to encounter the unusual eagle. The bird’s leucism — a genetic condition that results in reduced pigmentation — gives it a unique appearance, characterised by pale brown and white feathers. Unlike albinism, which entirely lacks colour, leucism allows for some shading while still causing a noticeable change in appearance.

Determined to take high-quality images, Nunn dedicated a substantial portion of his day to the pursuit, spending around eight hours in wait. He meticulously observed the eagle as it moved from one tree to another, holding out hope that it would eventually approach closer. Despite the uncertainty and the absence of guarantees in wildlife photography, his patience proved invaluable.
“I drove back to southwest Missouri, hoping to find the leucistic eagle again and pray I could get some clean shots even at a distance,” Nunn stated. This level of commitment is a testament to his passion for wildlife photography. Each moment spent waiting was a step towards the possibility of capturing the perfect shot.
As the day progressed, Nunn’s perseverance paid dividends. Late in the afternoon, the eagle finally flew within a few hundred yards of his position, presenting him an extraordinary opportunity. “Finally, late in the day, she came within a couple of hundred yards, which is the best opportunity I had gotten,” he recounted, reflecting on the thrills of the hunt for the ideal image.
Despite the favourable distance, the challenge of securing a good shot remained. Nunn described some of the lengths he went to in order to get these remarkable photographs, mentioning that many were taken from an unconventional position—lying on the ground and shooting through fences and foliage. This highlights the creativity often required in wildlife photography, where angles and proximity can make all the difference.
Nunn expressed genuine pride in these photos, claiming they represent some of the highest achievements in his photography career. “These are some of the photos I’m most proud of in my entire photography career,” he remarked. He emphasised that it was not simply their aesthetic quality that made them special, but the effort and time invested in their creation, as well as the significance of the subject itself.
The rarity of leucistic bald eagles in the wild makes sightings and photographs of such birds particularly sought after by wildlife photographers and bird enthusiasts alike. The striking visuals provided by Nunn serve not only as an artistic accomplishment but also as a celebration of the uniqueness of nature.
Through perseverance and dedication, Terry Nunn has captured significant moments of wildlife behaviour, immortalising the beauty of these rare creatures for those who appreciate the wonders of the natural world. His work encourages a greater understanding and respect for wildlife, reminding us of the patience and commitment required in the pursuit of excellence in any craft.
