Sabrina Ionescu, a prominent star of the New York Liberty and former collegiate basketball standout, is taking significant strides to nurture the next generation of young athletes. The 28-year-old has announced her partnership with Abbott to champion youth soccer through the Abbott Dream Team, a unique programme designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of aspiring players.
The Abbott Dream Team offers a remarkable opportunity for 16 young soccer players from the United States. Selected participants will receive elite training overseen by Real Madrid coaches during a week-long experience in Madrid, Spain. Ionescu, who is passionate about empowering athletes, sees this initiative as a vital way to support young talents on their journeys.

“Believing in yourself and controlling what you can” is Ionescu’s key advice for youngsters aspiring to excel in any sport. Her insights stem from her own experiences throughout her athletic career, where self-belief has played a crucial role in her achievements. Ionescu emphasised the importance of developing this mindset from a young age, highlighting that recognising one’s potential can significantly impact future success.
The WNBA player expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I’m super excited to partner with Abbott and Real Madrid to continue to pour into the next generation of young soccer players and young athletes.” She underscored the significance of such programmes, which can greatly influence young players, providing them with the tools and knowledge to improve their abilities and reach their goals.
The qualifying events for this initiative will take place from May 19 to June 9 across various cities including Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Participants must be U.S. residents aged 18 or 19, and they will compete for a fully funded trip to Madrid. The selected 16 players will not only engage in intensive training but will also gain insights into performance nutrition from Abbott. This holistic approach aims to prepare young athletes not just physically, but also nutritionally.
In addition to her role in this programme, Ionescu has made headlines as an investor in Bay FC, a soccer club she envisions as a pivotal addition to the Bay Area community. She referred to her investment as a “no-brainer,” recognising the wealth of soccer talent and enthusiasm in her hometown. With a commitment to fostering local talent and incorporating Bay Area fans into the sport, Ionescu sees her investment as a way to inspire young players and promote soccer in the region.
The Abbott Dream Team programme speaks to her own experiences with sports nutrition. Ionescu reflected on how understanding these principles earlier in her own career could have enhanced her performance, stating, “If I could have started at a younger age, it would have been that much better.” Her passion for youth sports extends beyond soccer, encompassing a broader commitment to supporting women’s athletics.
The recent spotlight on women’s sports, particularly following exceptional performances by female Olympians and the growing popularity of leagues such as the PWHL and WNBA, has further fuelled Ionescu’s advocacy. She stated that all women athletes are collaborating to strengthen their respective sports while creating a dynamic environment that encourages growth and fandom.
Ionescu believes that this collective effort to elevate women’s sports is vital in shaping the future landscape. Such initiatives, she asserts, will not only benefit young athletes today but will also leave a lasting legacy for future generations in various sporting disciplines.
As she continues to pave the way for aspiring athletes, Ionescu’s commitment to nurturing young talent and championing women’s sports reflects a broader movement toward inclusivity and recognition in athletics. Through her partnership with Abbott and Real Madrid, she is setting a precedent for the importance of mentorship and education in sports, ensuring that the next generation has the tools they need to succeed.
