A 17-year-old girl is currently on the mend following a harrowing incident involving a golf cart that left her critically injured. Lizette Vega was celebrating her birthday with friends in her Florida neighbourhood when the vehicle tipped over, trapping her underneath and causing significant harm.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 7 March, as Vega and five companions took a ride on the golf cart, which was reportedly weighing around 900 pounds. Vega recalled the moment the vehicle began to tip. “It was like slow motion,” she commented, reflecting on the frightening experience. “As it started falling, I thought, I’m going to die here.”

Fortunately, two of her friends, one aged 17, who opted to remain anonymous, and 15-year-old Nyemah Johnson, quickly sprang into action. They managed to lift the golf cart off Vega, allowing her to escape from beneath the heavy vehicle. Johnson later expressed her disbelief at how they accomplished this feat. “We just lifted it up,” she remarked, acknowledging the sheer urgency of the situation.
In the aftermath, Vega was rushed to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Centre where she underwent surgery for a broken femur. Doctors installed metal rods in her leg and hip following what Vega described as her leg “snapping in half” during the accident. Despite her injuries, she expressed relief that she was the only person hurt in the incident. “It was bad, but I’m glad I’m the only one who got hurt because, at the end of the day, it was my golf cart,” she stated.
Reflecting on the warnings from her mother, who had advised her against riding the golf cart, Vega acknowledged that she had not heeded her parent’s advice. “She was like, ‘Don’t let anybody ride it,’ or ‘don’t do that,’ and I didn’t listen to her,” Vega confessed. Her experience serves as a reminder of the importance of parental guidance, and she has since advised other teenagers to take their parents’ advice more seriously. “Listen to your parents because they’re never wrong when they say stuff,” she urged.
Johnson also shared her gratitude that her friend survived the ordeal, emphasising that the situation could have been much worse. “It could’ve been way worse than it was, and we’re just very blessed she’s okay,” she said.
Due to the severity of her injury, Vega faces a lengthy recovery period and will be unable to participate in several of her favourite activities, such as wrestling and flag football, as well as missing a promotion in her ROTC programme. Despite the challenges ahead, she remains optimistic about her healing process.
As her friends and family rally around her during this challenging time, Vega’s experience serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers associated with recreational vehicles. The incident highlights the importance of safety measures and parental guidance for young individuals.
In the days since the accident, community members have expressed their support for Vega, hoping for a full recovery as she navigates her rehabilitation. She has emerged from this traumatic experience with a newfound sense of caution and a message for her peers, emphasising the need to listen to those who care about their wellbeing.
