A recent incident in San Diego saw a vehicle crash into the Little Sakana sushi restaurant, resulting in minor injuries to a few individuals. The collision took place on the evening of Sunday, 8 March, shortly after 5:15 p.m. As a result of the crash, a woman standing near the entrance was knocked over, and another diner fell from their chair.

San Diego Police Department Officer Colin Steinbroner reported that officers received multiple calls regarding a vehicle crashing into the restaurant. “There were two to three individuals listed as having minor injuries, primarily due to falling glass,” Officer Steinbroner informed the media. Medical personnel attended the scene, but most involved declined transport to a hospital and received treatment onsite.
The driver of the vehicle, a 70-year-old man, was identified as a regular patron of Little Sakana. According to restaurant manager Kaylani Cayabyab, this particular customer, known for his congenial nature, visits the establishment daily. “I see him every day and speak to him daily. We have developed a connection,” Cayabyab explained. She noted that he typically orders the same steamed rice dish accompanied by sauce.

While the police investigation into the causes of the accident remains ongoing, Cayabyab expressed her belief that the crash was unintentional. “I think his foot just slipped, and he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake,” she speculated. Such accidents are not uncommon, and the situation was exacerbated by a power outage that left the restaurant less busy on that particular day. Cayabyab remarked that weekends typically see a surge of customers, with waiting times sometimes stretching up to two hours. “Had there not been a power outage, it could have been much worse,” she added.
As part of the response to the incident, law enforcement confirmed that no patrons inside the restaurant, nor the driver himself, were pinned or severely injured. This outcome is especially fortunate given the potential for more serious consequences if the crash had occurred during busier hours.

Cayabyab also expressed a desire to see the driver return in the future, offering to provide him his favourite dish as a gesture of goodwill. “Hopefully, if he does manage to come back, I’d love to offer him his rice and sauce,” she remarked.
This incident is not isolated, as another crash involving an elderly driver occurred recently in Euless, Texas. The driver mistakenly accelerated into a barber shop instead of reversing. Although one individual in the shop was hit and others were injured by debris, there were no serious injuries reported in that case either.
Such incidents highlight the risks associated with elderly drivers, particularly in situations where confusion over controls might lead to accidents. As communities explore ways to enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians, these events serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and safety measures in busy settings.
As investigations continue, the Little Sakana sushi restaurant remains open, cautiously optimistic about its future. The management hopes to maintain the connection with their loyal patrons while ensuring that safety measures are properly observed to prevent similar occurrences from happening again.
