An investigation into a fatal incident on board Saga Cruises’ *Spirit of Discovery* has revealed that a passenger received inadequate treatment after suffering a severe spinal injury during a storm. The findings, published in March 2026 by the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB), evaluate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy that unfolded on 4 November 2023.

The report states that passenger Trevor Gilks was one of 115 individuals injured when the vessel encountered a fierce storm while crossing the Bay of Biscay. The storm caused the ship to lose propulsion, resulting in violent movements that complicated the crew’s response efforts. The report indicates that safe navigation was interrupted until the following morning, exacerbating the situation.

The investigation highlights that the onboard response was hindered due to the crew’s mass casualty plan not being put into action. Consequently, the medical team was overwhelmed, leading to delays in identifying the severity of Gilks’ injury. Initially, he was injured when the chair he was seated in toppled backward due to the ship’s abrupt motion, causing him to fall onto the deck.

Witness accounts shed light on the moments following the incident. A nurse attended to Gilks three minutes after the fall, documenting severe pain emanating from his upper back and neck. Although he received an X-ray in the ship’s medical centre, further assessments were not made even after the shore-based radiologist expressed uncertainties about potential cervical spine damage.
As his condition deteriorated, Gilks reported losing sensation in his legs. Concerns for his well-being led the ship’s doctor to recommend medical evacuation. However, the captain opted for him to remain on board until arrival in Portsmouth, citing treacherous weather conditions outside.
Tragically, Gilks succumbed to his injuries on 8 November 2023, with his death attributed to complete cervical spine injury, according to the report’s findings.
In light of the incident, the MAIB emphasised that substantial measures must be taken by the ship’s management, medical service providers, and other parties involved to enhance safety protocols.
Saga Cruises shared a statement reflecting on the report and expressed their condolences to the friends and family of Trevor Gilks. While they acknowledged the MAIB’s recommendations, the company voiced disagreement with certain aspects of the investigation’s conclusions, asserting that the summary did not faithfully represent the detailed report.
The cruise line maintains that passenger safety is their utmost priority and highlighted their commitment to following industry best practices in all operational areas. Following the event, they have expressed dedication to implementing changes aimed at improving safety measures across their fleet.
Saga Cruises reassured the public that they continue collaborating with partners to ensure all recommendations by the MAIB are properly addressed and integrated into their practices, reinforcing their commitment to passenger well-being moving forward.
As the cruise industry faces ongoing scrutiny regarding safety, incidents such as this highlight the critical importance of effective emergency protocols and immediate medical responses, especially under challenging conditions. The tragic passing of Trevor Gilks serves as a solemn reminder of the realities faced by both passengers and crew during maritime voyages.
